Shouldn't be something to be argued with in the first place considering that the IP address doesn't prove anything.

That just proves a computer out there somewhere has a IP given to it by a DHCP client.. who is on the other side of it has no relevance.
Hasn't there been discussions of IP portability though? Amongst wireless devices namely and possibly part of IPv6? I think if we eventually have "static" IPs assigned to devices when you purchase them, it would make a much more solid case in court.

Perhaps to some degree but what if you lose your phone or your buddy is doing something on it? Then all that can happen is that you the owner is going to get nailed for something you didn't do.

Fortunately, we live in a country where guilt has to be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. While IP addresses might lead to routers or computers, they do not prove who was operating them or had access to them.

then youll see the mom being sued and trashed tru courts for her 10 yr old kids downloading of a few songs or whatever...:)
