Alright...more folding power on the way! (Eventually)

I just stepped up two of my GTX 285s to 295s. I will keep the 3rd GTX 285 so I should have 5 GPUs folding on my main and the 9800 GT folding on the backup!

I hope the Corsair can handle the load!

Oh my. :shok:

LCB, you were right. We have created Folding Monsters.

Meh...I'll just bump my 9600GSO shaders a little...:bananafunky:

Here is a thread on the NCIX forums where Yellowbeard says that the 1000HX could not handle 3 295s for constant folding:
NCIX FORUMS - 3x 295 GTX? - Corsair HX1000W CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX 2...

They recommend a 2 PSU setup. I know that you don't have 3 GTX 295s, but I don't think you will be too far from it. The thread was not conclusive I think but its is certainly cutting it close.

Yeah I was thinking about that...:blarg:

Well I might have to cancel the step up.

By the time I step up, get waterblocks and a new PSU (it'd have to be the PCP&C 1200W) I'm looking at another $1000

I think I might just keep on the lookout for a 9800 GX2 and a cheapo quad for the backup rig as a way to boost PPD.

I would have thought there was a significant difference in power draw between 3 GTX295's and 3 GTX285's. I'm not too sure about the power consumption, but 6 gpu's vs 3 sounds like a huge difference in power requirements.

UPDATE on my 9800GX2:

Ever since I changed the TIM on the 9800GX2, seems like the EUE's have subsided for the most part. Still getting the occassional one, but I get those on both my other cards too once in a while. I just went into the other room to check on the folding status, I got kinda worried. The temperature in the room was pretty warm (felt like at least 25-29C) so I checked on the 9800GX2 temps. It now isn't budging a single degree over 80C! And, I've also noticed that yesterday it was in the mid 70'sC but what's interesting is that the fan no longer runs at 100% all the time. Hovers between high 60%-80% most of the time to maintain temps. All in all, one of the best things I could have done for the GX2!

I agree Nade. However I was comparing 2 x GTX 295s and 1 x 285 to the three 295s in the post I linked.

ahh...you meant zlojack was shooting for 2 gtx295's and a single 285...gothcya! In that case, it would seem pretty damn close.

As long as your GX2 behaves you should be doing ~19,000 to 22,000+ ppd when combined with the 4870X2 and the 8800gt. That's some pretty nice ppd.

If you get really desparate you could upgrade the 8800gt, that should be good for a quick fix...:haha:

LCB, for some reason I'm not able to get that kind of PPD from my cards...at least not at present. The GX2 does anywhere between high 7000 to high 8000 PPD (and that's with the shaders OC'd to 1599). The 4870X2 these days is getting anywhere from low 6000 to high 8000 depending on the WU's. 8800GT usually is in the low 3000..sometimes goes up to 5000 but that's rare. I also have an smp client running on a stock e3110 on the 9800GX2 rig which seems to get around 1500PPD.

Seems to me my combined setup is still underperforming somewhat. I usually only get in the 17000-18000 ppd range, though the other day I got over 20k. My cards seem to do really well with the 548 point WU's, but i'm still getting plenty of 511's on the GX2. i'd love to get the PPD I should be getting. According to your assessment, I'm definately not putting up the PPD I should be. Any ideas?

6K-8K on the GX2 is really low...my old GTX 260 Core 216 got 6000PPD, about 5K on a 511. My new 285 is getting 9K consistently (as low as 8500, as high as 9500).

I am not familiar with the 548 pointers...you set the "-advmethods" flag? You have two instances of the GPU client going per GX2 card (ie. one install per chip)?
