Well both the 55nm 9800GT and the GT 240 go for around $100-120. But the GT 240 seemingly uses half the amount of power. And well I'm not out to set any folding records, just provide solid 24/7 support.
Well, the GT240 only puts out 2/3 the PPD of a 9800GT, so I don't think it's worth it.

Which defeats the purpose since then it's no longer passive.

not quite. the airflow needed is so small you can use the quietest fan available :)

Not sure I'd go by that power consumption chart, Folding uses less power than gaming or a full stress test.

They have the 9800GTX and GTS250 listed as using ~170-175 watts and mine sure don't.

My second rig with two 9800GTX+'s OC'd and a [email protected] 3.67 plus nine fans etc pulls ~350w according to my UPS and I can't see the 250's using more than that. Closer to the 100w would be more like it...

Correct my Friend LCB001, the GTS250 I had was about 1/3rd less power consumption according to my UPS than the GTX+.

The ones I looked at were high. I didn't go through the entire list of course, but that was enough for me to get an idea.
fair enough. i looked upon the list on a few exemples, and trusting my not super uber mega extremely accurate killawatt i checked a few and they seemed right, within a 5% or so margin. different clocks and core voltage will of course change the numbers.
