I am looking for android phone recommendations with a max of $400 for my father (less $ is better, but slightly more may be feasible if it is massively worth it). My knowledge of the android world is lacking for recent phones.

Use will be general web browsing, pictures (best camera possible in budget without sacrificing other aspects too much), occasional basic games, many years of use (so a durable screen is a plus). Minimum screen size of 6", but closer to 6.5" is preferred.

I just noticed that the pixel 6a is currently $399, which seems like a very good price based on my limited knowledge in the area (but it is on the lower end of screen size that he is looking for). Samsung A53 is in that price bracket, but it seems like the 6a is likely the better choice between the two with a quick look. Other lower end Motorola, Samsung, etc are available in the $200-300 ballpark, but I feel like they will be outdated on purchase based on the specs (am I wrong?).

What other or better options are there? Anything used that may be worth considering?

EDIT:
To close this off, he wasn't able to find anything in budget that fit the must have requirements. He ended up going for an open box (but not used) pixel 6 pro for $500.

The 7 was available at the same cost ($510), but he didn't care about the gains of the newer CPU (on the 7)...and did care about the 4x optical zoom camera (6 pro). A few other points as well in the decision, but that was the main driver. Seems very happy with it so far.

I would have recommended the 6a, if it is in the right price range when you are ready to buy. I know a couple people that have it and are happy with it.

I second the Samsung choices. We have been back and forth over a few iterations of phones in the past. Cheap Chinese phones, LG, and the like, and we seem to return to Samsung after 1 generation.

If used/refurb isn't out of the question, you can probably find a Pixel 6/Pro or Galaxy S22 for around $400 too.

Does your father use Samsung today? That alone might make it worthwhile sticking to as the interface will remain similar.

I got my mom the Pixel 6A and it's been working fine for her. The swiping gestures aren't her favourite though :)

Thanks for the replies so far. He is not currently using Samsung (can’t remember which brand off hand, but it was a cheap one).

The big pull towards the 6a is the much better cpu/gpu vs current Samsung phones in the same price bracket.

Happy to take on any other opinions/options.

You mean the gestures rather than the buttons at the bottom of the screen? The back, home, and window switching or whatever button? I turned off the gestures and went back to the three buttons on my Pixel 6. There's an option in settings. I was able to do it on my old Pixel 3 for my daughter too. Can you not do that on the Pixel 6a? That be an odd omission.

You can, but I'm pretty sure iOS is all gesture based so I can't imagine Pixel keeping it around forever. She might as well learn it now before she's too old :)

The Pixel 6A is kinda small too, no need to waste the screen real estate for buttons. But it's also why I probably wouldn't get it for my dad who has "fat" fingers (he's a mechanic)

Righto. I figured you knew that option was there already, wasn't trying to insult your intelligence! Just figured it was worth mentioning just in case :)
