mirrored Windows Storage Spaces or Intel IHS RAID 1 - which is better?

I'd go software RAID 1 over hardware RAID 1 where possible. But I don't know enough about storage spaces to know how it really works or fits into things in comparison.

I will say RAID is not a backup, I repeat RAID is not a back up (I have to tell myself that a lot too) it is about uptime and availability.

Even with RAID 1 or Sotrage Spaces you still want an actual backup.

yes, I will have that...got a DS423+ with 14TB.

edit - also, isn't the Intel IHS RAID software based? I think only servers boards, maybe some advanced workstation boards, would have onboard hardware RAID.

If you use Software based RAID such as converting windows disks into Dynamic and doing RAID1 - you can swap it into any window system and it will pick it up (import) just fine.

Intel RAID - I am not so sure if you swap the mobo if it will work fine with another one. Measure your risks accordingly.

can you share some examples of what you would recommend for software RAID solutions?

I don't think any "RAID1" solutions differ as it's just copying data to both disks when you write. I can't see why any solution would cause your data to be inaccessible if 1 drive dies and you plug it into a different PC.

It's only RAID5/6/10/etc that it would be a concern.

But if you want to be confident, test it before you fill it. Setup RAID1 however you want, put a file on it, unplug a drive and plug it into another PC and see if its accessible.
