I think this will be a big win for the industrial complex, EDGE devices and by extension, the miniPC community and those who love to cram as much performance as possible into the smallest space using thin profile ITX boards.

one of the standout bits in this article is how the CAMM2 socket is use replaceable...you don't have to send a board back to the MFR if the DIMM / SODIMM slots get damaged somehow.

I guess for those people that somehow mesh up the CPU socket, this is a life saver. Good to hear that they are working on a tool-less mounting solution but somehow someone will end up jamming a screw driver thru the board. If there are people dumb enough to saw a PCB in half to fit inside a case, they will somehow mess it up.

I agree with most of that but don't understand the mesh up the CPU socket bit. where did that come from? I know CPU sockets have been pulled of boards when the thermal product creates so much suction that's what gives way first...but I've read about snapping off DIMM sockets on more than one occasion. can't say I've ever heard of anyone tearing off a SODIMM socket before, at least not the horizontal ones you see on a laptop. If you can do that to a vertical DIMM it makes sense it can be done to a vertical SODIMM too. :P
 
It's a reference to the CAMM2 pad that have springy pins just the CPU socket. If people can mesh the pins during a CPU install, they can also mesh up the CAMM2 pins. Now if they can apply the same thing to CPU socket, that would be nice. For some reason you always get 1 or 2 pins slightly bend even if you didn't drop the CPU or press on it during install.

a thought popped into my head regarding about whether CAMM2 will affect the quality and performance of top down HSF and help provide better cooling support for thin ITX mobo because they no longer have to be shaped to compensate for DIMM height.
