Hello!

I am really sorry if my English is not perfectly perfect. Only eight months ago, I did not speak English, but I made a big effort to become bilingual after moving from Trois-Rivières to Montréal. Most french computer forums are from France or Belgium anyway and not very utilistic (utile) for me. If you need me to write it in French for understanding, please tell me. The english word didn't seem right to me sometimes so I put the french word in parenthesis.

My current computer is an Acer Veriton M and I made edits (j'ai fait le montage) over the years but I think its finally getting older and I would like to move to a new config. I was also thinking of moving from PlayStation to PC and would like to build a Gamer's PC (PC Gamer). My budget is about 1200$.

Here's what I was considering :

CPU: Intel Core i5-9400F 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor ($185.50 @ shopRBC)
Motherboard: ASRock B365M Phantom Gaming 4 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($175.26 @ Amazon Canada)
Memory: G.Skill NT Series 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($42.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Kingston A400 480 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($68.98 @ Amazon Canada)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($54.50 @ Vuugo)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3 GB SC GAMING Video Card ($267.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Case: Rosewill Stryker M ATX Mid Tower Case ($74.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Power Supply: Corsair CXM 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ Canada Computers)
Total: $940.20

I would also take a new monitor, loudspeakers (haut-parleurs) and Windows key. I'm not too concerned about going over the budget.

The case I'm not completely sure because frankly (franchement) I like the existing Veriton M style (It's the Veriton M4618G-Ui5240W if you want to research it (si vous voulez le rechercher)). If any of you know cases of the same style, please tell me because I don't think it'll fit in the existing case. As for the hardware, this is my first build so I'm not perfectly sure of it and about what is good to choose and I hope you could help me with that.

Please do tell me if I made any mistakes, that's how I learn. Bonne journée!

You've got a good starting point, and your English is very good if you only learned it 8 months ago, so no need to worry about it :)

I would suggest going with 16GB of RAM and in a higher speed, somewhere in the range of 3000-3600 depending on sales/prices.

For your storage, go with a 1TB M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive instead - Corsair MP510, ADATA SX8200 Pro, HP EX950. If you need to keep costs down, then the Crucial P1 or Intel 660p. Up to you if you'll still need the hard drive or not.

NVIDIA is launching the 1660 Super soon at $229USD. That will be a better choice than the 1060. Even the normal 1660 today is a better card.

You may also want to consider AMD instead as well, though the Ryzen 3600 will be more expensive, it offers much better performance.

Welcome! What is in your current acer for cpu and graphics card?

Also, Black Friday / cyber Monday sales are in a month, so I would wait to build.

I would remove the hdd and the ssd. Replace it with a single 1TB nvme. Depending on sales, an SX8200, SX8200 pro, SX8200, ex920, ex950, mp510, P34A80. All good choices on sale. Not a P1 or 660p.

If you're going to buy a nVidia GTX 1060, make sure you buy the 6GB version. I would wait and see the performance of the AMD RX 5500 and see how it measure against the nVidia GTX 1060 and GTX 1660 family. Anyway, below is a basic gaming PC I created.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor ($253.25 @ Vuugo)
Motherboard: ASRock B450M PRO4 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($76.36 @ Vuugo)
Memory: Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($77.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: HP EX920 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($143.99 @ PC-Canada)
Video Card: ASRock Radeon RX 580 8 GB Phantom Gaming X Video Card ($219.95 @ Vuugo)
Case: Fractal Design Focus G Mini MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($69.75 @ Vuugo)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12III 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($61.75 @ Vuugo)
Total: $903.04

Thank you!

For context, I bought the Veriton in Winter 2011 for about 700$. Or sometime and something like that, I’m not sure of it. At the time I was working in freelance Photo Editing and later Video editing.

The Veriton M has been around for many years and is marketed as the highest end office PC of Acer, destined for freelancers and small businesses who work with Photoshop, Large Databases and Excel Sheets, Software Development, Maybe Some Video Editing etc but don’t have a budget for 2 000$ + configs. The marketing also talked a lot of its expandability with PCIe Cards and SATA bays.

The current CPU is a Core i7-2600. It comes stock with an i5-2400 but I upgraded it in 2014. It was kind of pointless since it’s not more than a little bit higher performance and it cost a lot but that’s what I have.

That comes with HD 2000 but within a few months that was not working for me and I installed a 500W Power Block and a Radeon HD 6670. In 2014 I upgraded again to a low Profile GTX 750 of MSI. And most recently I upgraded to MSI GTX 1050 Ti.

My other upgrades include a 500GB SSD for startup, and 2 x 1TB HDD for files.

I am with Moocow in that you should seriously consider an AMD system for gaming. :)

If gaming, especially at 1080p, the 2600 is still a power house. Just upgrade the GPU to a RX 480/580 and it will already perform better. Also, I would not buy a new GPU now, with the risk of buying a mined on GPU, I would do exactly that, but get a model that has 2 or 3 fans, and make sure you order a replacement fan from eBay to have it handy if one fan fails.
You are not losing much from sata III to NVME transition either, I had a hard time telling which was which between my 2 NVME drives, Toshiba XG5 and Samsung 950 Pro and the sata III Crucial MX 500. Unless you are doing heavy video editing, there is no reason to ditch the 2600. And then, even if you do, there is nothing a cost effective Precision T5500/T7500 with ( cheap ) dual hex core Xeons cannot chew through.

How much memory / RAM are you using in the machine? I'm using an i7-2600 as well but usually run 8GB to 16GB of RAM. It works perfectly fine with 1 SSD for Windows 10 and 1 SSD for games (2 x 480GB). A used AMD RX 580 8GB would be a good upgrade, I seen them as low as $150 on Facebook Market in the Vancouver area, I suspect it would be similar in the Montreal region. Also, I recommend cleaning out the dust from inside the case and apply new thermal paste to the CPU.
