Yeah, that's a tight budget..ideally a 7600/8600...but they're hard to find in that price range. Unless he's willing to gamble with a mail-in-rebate, he won't get one. That would leave an ATI 2600Pro/Nv 8500GT.:help:

Here's a couple possibilities:

w/MIR

2600Pro

8500GT-passive

w/o MIR

7600GS

8500GT-passive

He can get an 8600GT for ~$60-$70 if he's willing to go with a large MIR. 8600GT..which i doubt he can afford.. judging by your post. GL

I'm in agreement. 8600GT, NCIX and Canada Direct have the Galaxy 512MB version with MIR if he can afford to wait to get his $40 back.

Otherwise look for a second hand card. I just unloaded my HD2600XT 256MB for $80 two weeks ago and it was only 3mths old. There must be others willing to do that for an upgrade.

I just checked and the $40 rebate also applies to the galaxy 8500GT so if he's really on a budget he can pick up the 8500 for about $80 and still get $40 back...

I'd not buy an 8500GT, really it's a very disappointing card. There's a lot of good used cards floating around that offer huge bang for the buck. The for sale ads here, red flag, cragislist etc is definitely your friend when building on a budget. I picked up a 1900XT 512 meg for 90 bucks including shipping and the original box for my nephew... there's deals to be had for sure.

Yup I'd go 2nd hand with that budget. I sold my 7900GS for $90 and a 6800GS for $45, both on craigslist.

I have an x800 xl that I would sell for that, was $450 new (man what that would buy now, that was only a couple years ago).

Lemme know, it'll beat any of the ones on your list. Bit worse than the 7900GS (but cheaper), and 8600gt (but not by much, which is sad for the 8600).

I can formalize the "for sale" ness of it if requested, but I am using it right now so I need cash in hand before I say its for sale (figuritivly speaking):bananafunky:
