New 1440p Monitor

Hey guys, I'm currently running a pcmark 1440p korean monitor. It has a great picture, but I'm moving to a 144hz monitor for better gaming functionality. I'm a bit torn with g-sync, freesync, etc. Would like to stick with an IPS panel as I love the colours and improved viewing angle.. But TN panels have likely improved since the last one I bought 8 years ago.

It's mostly coming down to cost... Sure I could spend $1k+ on a screen, but I'm having a hard time justifying if it will be worth buying an IPS g-sync monitor vs a Tn 144hz panel as it's literally double the price.

With that being said

option #1: Acer Predator XB271HU for $1000 - IPS and G-Sync @ 144hz
option #2: ASUS MG279Q for $650 - IPS @ 144hz
option #3: ASUS MG278Q for $550 - TN @ 144hz

I'll be running at least a 980 ti, just waiting for the new cards to come out. Is G-sync really worth 350+, or will the difference be mitigated by running consistent high FPS on a less expensive monitor?

I'm comparing prices at new, I never have good luck with refurb products... although ncix has a couple refurbed predators that would be tempting @ $750.

I can't talk by experience since I run a pair of 570, but what I read almost everywhere is that G Sync is really worth it. But I also read that the 980ti will deliver more than enough performance that you can skip G Sync and not miss it that much.

If I had the money, I'd go with a G Sync monitor. Simply put, I think the monitor will last longer than my GPU setup if both are bought at the same time. Thus, it'll have an effect much longer and over multiple GPU generations.

I do want to emphasize though that I haven't experienced either. This is plain interpretation of what I've read.

I just got the MG278Q on that sale of $550 which i found to be worth it completely. Usually these high end monitors cost us $750+ here in canada and i couldn't justify spending that much so i took the jump when i saw the Asus on sale. It has amazing picture quality and it would be hard pressed to tell the difference in picture quality as i also have a regular IPS LG monitor beside it as my secondary and find it to be very minor. Believe it or not but the Viewing angles are actually pretty good and don't wash out unless you really go in a sharp enough angle to view the screen which i don't know why you would anyways...maybe you have friends who watch you play from the side? Also reviews i've read shows that every new gaming IPS screen being released so far still suffer from IPS Glow and some with bad backlight bleeding, so be prepared to gamble and hope to win the monitor lottery if u go the IPS route lol.

Gsync and Freesync are great technologies but you would be fine without them at constant high FPS, you really only notice the benefit if you experience a large drop in FPS at a time like going from 120fps to 80fps then gsync/freesync would try to give u a smooth transition whereas without it you would have a split second of the fragment. If u really only dip less than 20fps at a time you probably wont notice but probably u would at more than 30fps. These new 8-bit TN panels are top end and i'd recommend them if you're like me and rather spend the extra money on a computer part like the GPU. I was gonna wait for the perfect IPS monitor with all the bells and whistles but then i realized the prices for these upcoming monitors would be at minimum $1000+ so i went with this high grade TN.

I think that answers it for me, I'm too hesitant spending $1k on technology that isn't ironed out yet.

I do happen to have a Acer Predator XB271HU and I can say from the few months experience that it is amazing. Even with my GTX 970 still allows for very smooth gameplay even @ 1440p. I play Batthefield 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Marvel Hero's L4D2, TF2 and a few others at the res with no slow downs what so ever. I know it's a lot of money, it took me nearly a year to save for it, but i don't regret buying it in the slightest.

I do not doubt any of you other choices would do you fine, but I just thought I would give a small perspective for the high end.

Just ordered the ASUS MG279Q, couldn't justify the extra cost of g-sync, and really wanted to keep IPS... I was going to get a TN panel and keep my IPS, but I don't need 2 27" monitors.

I'll pick up a 1080 once the 3rd party companies start releasing them.

Your call on G-Sync but I think the extra cost is totally worth it if you are planning to stay with nvidia and ready to pay $1,000+ for a 1080... The extra amount for G-Sync seems kinda marginal at this point...

That monitor is Freesync so you would be better off switching to amd in order to taste the sweet nectar of variable refresh...

Yup, buyers regret/remorse won out. I cancelled the order, going to get the proper ROG one instead... although it is an extra $450ish lol.

Is there any 1440p 120-144hz IPS G-SYNC monitor round up reviews around?

I'm looking into my first upgrade in 3 years. I want to swap from a 1440p Korean monitor powered by an GTX Titan to a 1440p Gsync IPS monitor power by a GTX 1080 (hopefully hydrocopper or EK block if hydrocopper isn't available).

Right now the two I've been watching are the Acer XB271HU and the ASUS PG279Q. With possible consideration of 4k variants, if a single gtx 1080 can handle it.
