no audio

greetings again all, i am totally thrown for a loop. I just finished building my new system today with no problems whatsoever. For some reason, I can't get any audio/mic. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the audio driver (AC'97 ALC850) the audio controllers, devices, driver signatures, ran sandra, everything I could possibly think of. I have never run across a problem like this after a build. Bios is current, NV chipset is fine, tried plying mp3, audio disc, (WMP9), i'm pretty much at my wit's end. Any suggestions? Would purchasing a separate sound card solve this issue if all else fails or am I missing something totally stupid?

I am not an expert, but I had trouble getting audio on my board when I first set my system up, until I realized that there was some proprietary software installed with the motherboard that controlled the sound configuation (speaker arrangements, effects, etc), and I had to go into this and activate my speaker by telling it that I had only two front speakers. The icon for it was on the windows desktop toolbar. This probably isn't your problem, but you never know.

Thanks for your reply. After searching through many forums, it appears that the Realtek ALC 850 and the P5N32 series of motherboards don't get along in many cases. In some cases, the problem was resolved by reloading windows or editing the registry. The software that detects the speaker jacks was actually causing my computer to flash BSOD for a second then automatically reboot:shok: . The event log told me I had pushed ctrl+alt+delete then clicked start. Definitely some major issues here. I have a solution. I'm going to purchase a sound card that doesn't use this audio codec. Audigy 2 series cards sound good and can be found on ebay for a decent price. Cheers!

If you haven't already run out and purchased a sound card (not that a separate sound card is a bad idea.... ), I'd suggest a quick check of your mobo manual to see what jumpers need to be made to enable sound without using the case connections.

I cursed my young lad's last build until I discovered that two of the jumper pin sets (on the mobo) had to be made in order to transfer the signal to the rear ports.

If your case doesn't play nice with the onboard, the onboard should still work fine from the rear ports.

For some reason, ALC 850 and P5N32 SLI SE deluxe won't play nice on my system. At work today, I ripped out a SB live 5.1 out of a computer that was in the recycling cage. I plugged it in, installed the basic drivers from Creative and whamo!!! I have sound. I never thought it would be so sweet to hear that annoying xp startup sound. With a little configuration, I'll be O.K until my Audigy shows up.
btw, i ran memtest the last few days, as well as a burnin' of my cpu and bandwidths. Minimum 6 hrs a shot at 115% with sandra. Do you think it is safe to overclock yet?

If you're satisfied that your system is stable @ stock speeds it's probably safe to start pushing it a bit.

Just remember to take baby steps & monitor your temps/stability.

Are you new to OC'ing? Do you have a guide you're following?

I have done some overclocking before but nothing extreme. I oc'ed my old 3.2 northwood to 3.45, my ddr 3200 to around 428 and my gforce fx 5500 cooled with an icberq 4 on an asus p4s 800. Chenming 601 AE case cooled with 3x 80mm intake fans and 2x80mm exhaust fans. made more noise than my refrigerator, but excellent airflow and rock stable. I get most of my info from overclocking forums. I will probably switch to liquid cooling eventually.
