Thought we had a NMS thread. Mods merge this in if I just missed it.

So the "Next" update is out and the Internet is all in love with the changes. They do look like improvements with some real multiplayer, albeit limited to 4 player instances it looks like. Still, that is an improvement.

I ran into issues right away with the game doing something that triggered my default Windows sound over and over! :shok: It's the sound you get when you move the Windows volume slider. Nothing I tried could get it to stop. No other game or program has this issue, same peripherals, no stuck keys or buttons anywhere, no other controllers plugged in, and it didn't do it in NMS before the update.

And the other thing that annoyed me is that the UI and HUD still looks like crap on a 3440x1440 ultrawide. There were a lot of complaints about ultrawide support when it originally launched and we are two or three major updates in and still no improvement. I know, they are appealing to console players, but still pisses me off.

EDIT: Note you can pick 3440x1440 as a resolution, but the UI to me still looks too large and stretched.

I do applaud them for continuing to work on the game and get out these big free updates. But the resolution support and the sound issue especially will keep me from venturing any farther into the new content for now.

Anyone else tried it with better success?

I was a huge advocator of the game but the lack of updates and anything happening with the game made me stop playing. As I did not backup my saved game I'd have to restart all over and well I don't feel like doing that.

Heh... I can't imagine that was the least bit annoying was it???? ;)

I skipped this one. The hype train was too strong and the dev comments made me think 'No way they'll pull this off'. That being said, I liked the concept and if there's a half decent story to be found I'd consider giving it a try at some point. At the very least kudos to the dev for continuing to work on it and provide free updates. Way too many games just have a developer cut and run.

Exactly how I feel. The super negative reviews at launch made me skip it but looks like the devs have redeemed themselves with all the new updates. I might get it cuz It's 50% off right now.

No not at all! :haha: As you might have noticed by the hint of tone in my post, the more I tried to play the more annoyed I became. Could be something on my end but given no other games I tested last night are having the same problem, have to point the finger at NMS I guess. Just really weird...

There is a story in game now, about a 30 hour campaign I believe. I played a little of it before this patch and it is interesting if very subtle on the story-side. Not fast paced or anything, but does provide some directed activities in the midst of the procedurally generated galaxy. I was intrigued by it. Although NPCs are still pretty blah IMO.

Launch was a disaster with the dev, Sean Murray, caught in what seemed to be just blatant lies about what the game was going to deliver. Personally, only my gut feel, I think the interviews and the hype kind of got away from him and he said things he couldn't deliver for release. Not sure how intentional it was vs just being caught up in the starry eyed moment. Maybe I am being too lenient. But as we've said, I have been impressed with Hello Games continued effort in the face of such a huge negative response after launch. I think the game is getting much closer to the things he promised and that is a good thing for people who like the genre.

I think it is certainly worth the 50% price, if you like large sandbox space games with little directed gameplay. Yeah there is the campaign but you'll still be doing a lot of wandering, exploring, looking for materials, craft and building stuff, etc.

It is unique though, and I'd certainly play it casually if I get this crazy sound thing fixed, even with the subpar 3440x1440 UI. It does offer something different than both Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen.

I am also tempted to buy this with its current 50% off sale and the latest large update.

I bought it when it came out and played around 70 hours, then put in another 30 or so after the Atlas Rises update. I was one of those people who liked it. I would tool around a planet trying to find all the animals to scan. I scan everything. I visited every planet in each star system I encountered. I had no desire to play multi-player, and I really still don't. In fact, I am a bit disappointed that someone could enter my game and decide to be a dick, because we know the internet is full of dicks just waiting to gank someone, or ruin their experience by destroying their base.

If you like just tooling around, exploring, and doing your own thing, then it will probably be worth your time to pick it up.

You can't lock down your own instance? I missed that "little" detail. That isn't good, I agree. I wouldn't mind trying multiplayer in it with people I know but I don't have any interest in having randoms wander in. :blarg:

How hard is it for people who join your instance to find your location though I wonder? I watched one video yesterday where they showed tagging a player so that you didn't lose track of them. But it appeared that you had to be able to actually see them to tag them.

If there is a way to lock it down I have not seen it. That said, I have not encountered anyone in my 10 hours of play so far. I guess time will tell what happens, but I have a feeling we will here of the odd encounter of unwanted interaction.
