I am just at a friend's system that won't post. The system starts up with the fans running and HD spinning sound. there is one beep, and on the monitor just one line showing the CPU type and speed. Nothing else appears. After almost an hour, the bios post and windows xp starts as if nothing was wrong. This happens everytime the system starts. I have a pair of goo RAM - that I've swapped to see if this isRAM, but no difference. What else can I check please.

Thanks.

goo ram? well if ram is gooey you got much larger issues.

Remove power from optical drives and hard drives and floppy drives and see if it boots faster.

Try swapping out the PSU if you have a spare. I had issues like that with my work PC about 6 months ago, it turned out to be a slowly dying PSU.

Good luck.

After a long wait, the system eventually starts. Is there any checks that I can conduct with Windows running ? I am at home to post this message, but will go back to my friends place later. Will look for a space video card and drive too.
Thanks.

My bets on keyboard or an USB device
I found out some older bios don't like newer keyboards
Right on ! Found the problem to be a USB Hub that was connected to the system. After hours of disconnecting and reconnecting the internal devices, I started to pull out the other connected devices at the back of the board. The USB hub was used to connect two printers - an HP Laser Printer and an Inkjet Printer. I removed the hub and the system booted up ok. Told my buddy to connect only one printer at a time.
Thanks for all the suggestions. You help is appreciated. Good experience for me too.
