A big "rumour" that was everywhere for a while is that some windows updates were causing phison based drives to fail. This isn't to say there isn't still something going on, but Phison has done 4500 hours of testing and they "....were unable to reproduce the reported issue, and no partners or customers have reported that the issue affected their drives at this time."

So...a non-story that blew up?

Yup, MS said they were investigating it too and haven't mentioned a thing about it since. At this point, we should have had many more reports and no more reports have come out, from what I have seen.

Apparently some of the drives that failed were using a beta firmware. People in the comment section aren't convinced at all since for them the drives worked before the Windows update. Also question why all of the Japanese user's drives failed if it's a beta firmware issue. IMO, this doesn't seem like a right answer because if it's a beta BIOS issue, wouldn't we see batches of drives fail like this? Or not a lot of people using these drives to play games?

Is it not possible that maybe the firmware was only released in Japan?, The only thing I could think of.

I don't feel like SSD firmware updates are very frequent, if at all. I don't think they even publish the "shipping" release like a motherboard does.

I think it would be pretty difficult to know if you have a beta/engineering firmware on something bought from retail as whatever update tools might just say there's no update available.

I realized I haven't updated the firmware on any NVME yet. Back in the day, with a 2.5-inch SSD, it was pretty normal to update the firmware.
I was just going to make that same comment about 2.5-inch SSDs. I did I think do one firmware update on my WD Black NVMes, right after I bought them.

I generally check when I get a new NVMe (assuming there's manufacturer's software), and then possibly again when/if I do a fresh install.

No problems on my rigs, they are all running older WD Black NVME though. There was a firmware update for the ones in my rig last winter I think.. I took them.
