I didn't want to desecrate @Shadowarez battlestation thread with this...but here's my current setup at the dinner table in the living room.

The cans and stack of papers just reminded me of an old computer I had ~2001ish. The case had a rattle in it and I had found placing a stack of paper and some weights on it caused the rattle to go away.

Edit: Just remembered wasn't just a normal stack of paper but a phone book. Might be the last phone book I ever made use of.

I do have plans...

the table is one of those oval oak monstrosities from the 80's that everyone bought. the rounded ends are a horrible thing on a desk as they force you to cramp everything together. so it's gotta go!

similar to the table, an oak veneer tv center when CRT's were still a thing. biggest handicap to getting it replaced is whatever goes there needs to have a lot of space to put my FiL A/V gear. turntable, VCR, DVD Player, CD Player, Integrated Amplifier, Input Switch and I'm sure I'm forgetting one thing, but it's not coming to me at the moment.

so a space inefficient table...a lousy tv centre to my left and to my back and right is a corner China cabinet. it looks awesome, but it's rickety as 5h!7 and I'm constantly smacking into it with my office chair.

and for the cherry on top, that 7.0 earthquake in the early 2010's caused the back corner of the foundation, yard, to sink / settle while, like you see in earthquake pics along the ground fissures, part of property was heaved up and exposed an ancient cement walkway when there was a city access path to the creek behind the place. it was buried and unknown. anyhow, the spot the dinner table sits isn't level, so my chair naturally responds to gravity and I am constantly fighting it's desire to drift into said China cabinet.

once we have some more breathing room, I can optimize the space around me for my PC stuff and work setup while avoiding any interference with Papa and his walker. he's mostly blind and gets angry quickly if one of the wheels or handles gets jammed up by something on the floor or a chair, table, stool that's migrated out a bit.

it sounds really bad, but essentially it all adds up to a big annoyance that we 'live' with. LoL!!!

mine was a awful monstrosity way to big like i keep mentioning it absolutely was a nightmare never knowing when it would just fall apart turned out if i moved it at all it would have been done. onc you start improving the area it'll calming and very soothing knowing your setup isnt in constant immanent danger of collapsing.

The easy/cheap one here is 2x4 Kallax without installing all the shelves with the TV wall mounted above it (wall mounting gives more usable surface on top.) But leaving some of the shelves out during assembly creates wide enough spaces for things like A/V gear

(basement is a disater right now but figured an image would help). Upstairs I didn't take this approach but I managed to find a subwoofer that fits inside the cubes.

I have no skillz, but have been thinking about having plywood cut up into thinner slats and then slide together with half-lap joints cut into em. I would end up with something like what you show, but can be easily customized and still be good with load bearing weight.
