just make sure you have a backup if using Synology or Qnap I speak from experience if one little thing goes wrong you can lose it all and even if you have fault tolerance built into your NAS they can die well rebuilding had that happen to a family member. hence why I use the methods I use now. but also try to have some fun with it or learn something new.

Guess it depends how much data you have, but I grabbed one of those 16TB external HDDs when on sale, moved all the files off, formatted the NAS and put the files back. Took about 2 days total I guess, the external drive was doing roughly 200MB/s (Exos X16 inside).
Yeah, after reading more about SHR, I may do this.

I’ve been using a Synology NAS for 4 years straight, not a single hiccup. 4tb drives x3 at first, I just added a fourth last month - easy peasy, no downtime.

As others have said, make sure you have an offline backup. Raid ain’t a backup solution by itself.

with both type of NAS SYN/QNAP you have to monitor it cause if one or more drive/s start throwing errors the other drivers can get hit really hard constantly trying to recoup your data this is what has killed many NAS cause the health drives can get hammered hard if there trying to rebuild a drive/s that are throwing error's all the time just a heads up.

my uncle/aunt ( really wife's uncle ) had this happen to there's and lost a lot of data cause he just did what he was told to let the unit rebuild your data without making sure that once the data was rebuilt that the drive/s wasn't throwing errors all the time stuck in a constant rebuild cycle. Some YouTubers have lost loads of data too like GN, Ashville ( another YouTuber ) lost a butt load too. this is the reason why I would always advise going with Unraid or Drivepool using Snapraid for parity, but snap is CMD only to make it easy to use lol there is a GUI for it which I could never get it working saying all this no matter what you use always make sure you still have a full backup.

good luck and never trust your important data to one machine/drive I keep a full mirror backup of the drives in my archive server for this reason

ps on another note bit rot is real I always make sure that my data is written to new drives then back again at least every 2 years any longer than that I don't trust it, Linus just lost a bunch of data from 2017-2018 too bit rot. FYI

For a pure home storage solution, I am repurposing my Dell 790. I ordered myself an IBM 5015 raid controller ( LSI 9260-8i ) and sff 8087 mini sas to 4 sata cables. I have a wd black 2TB and a 2TB Toshiba DTACA ( enterprise model ) to start with, and a brand new 4TB Ironwolf that I plan to incorporate in the raid5 matrix, later transitioning to Ironwolf only. Quick note : Ironwolf series has 3 free years of Rescue and Recovery and 3 year warranty as well. Ironwolf Pro has 5 years of warranty but only the first 3 enjoy free Rescue and Recovery. I opted for RAID5 as I need that PC to serve other home PC roles as well.
I think Ironwolf 4TB is on sale, everywhere it can be found at 99$.

I ended up getting the Synology DS920+ and four Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS drives. With taxes in it was just less than $1300 back in Feb.

I've set it up and pretty much forgotten about it. Playing around with the best way to get all my stuff in there automagically but I think its all good now.

Thanks for the help folks. Took me about a year and a half to make up my mind on this one.

There is a guy on Hardforum selling a 48TB NAS made only of m.2 SATA drives. Was asking 3800 USD I think. From his post :
48TB SSD storage subsystem. Looking to sell this as a group, but if I can account for all of the SSDs and the 24-port HBA, I’ll part it out. If you want the entire thing as it is setup, I will include a 150W picoPSU with the custom-made SATA power cables (will power this no problem as long as you have a reasonable CPU tdp – I used a supermicro X10sdv-TL4NF+ for my FreeNAS box). This will fit in a 2U case, height-wise, and generally takes up the same amount of space as two 3.5" HDDs. $3800 + shipping

- 24x 2TB Western Digital Blue m.2 SATA SSDs (WDS200T2B0B drives)
- LSI 9305-24i HBA
- 8x modified (shortened PCB and additional mounting holes drilled) quad-m.2 adapters (you get two extra that I had laying around :))
- 6x HBA cables for this setup
- 150W pico-PSU with 2x triple SATA power connectors

here is the backplane that was used. Crafty!
