Rants etc.....

More of an observation than a rant.....

They've been redoing the sewer pipes a block over from us for a couple of weeks and are working at ripping up a 2 block section of that street. What's "different" is that they've only got a single large backhoe to do that digging and appear to be loading up dumptrucks at one end of the street with the backhoe, and driving it around to the other end to dump it......

Never seen that before.
Filling new pipe as they go maybe?

Filling new pipe as they go maybe?

I figure they dug up the first length and stored the fill offsite, but then when it came to dig for new pipe they used that fill for the parts that were finished. Rinse and repeat until you need to grab the small offsite fill to finish it off.

Edit: More than likely this is common practice and has always been done like this. It just happens that I'm getting to see the process first hand this time around as the truck route passes in front of my house and sets off my doorbell cam.... :)

I'm not running W11 and I don't game, so can't really comment on how annoying this is / would be...but a bug where Windows pop-up ad's for Bing are interrupting game play and I know, for certain, 100%, that would enrage me.

luckily I have not seen that yet

I am still running Windows 10. This year I had been getting multiple notifications to go buy a new PC from the Microsoft Store, likely because my PC is too old for Windows 11. I have also been getting notifications for some Dolby Access thing.
Fortunately in this case they are normal system-type notifications instead of separate apps and they can be disabled.

Linux just keeps looking better and better.

If you really wanted windows 11...

Using the windows 11 media creation tool you can update to 11. Tell it that your updating a different computer and only download the installation ISO. Don't let it write to the USB stick itself you strictly want just the ISO. From there use Rufus to write the ISO to a USB stick and tweak the options to turn off all the tracking data and to remove the TPM 2.0 requirement. Then reboot and install from the USB drive.

Realistically nothing is stopping you from being able to use W10 for a while yet.

Linux Mint has been doing quite well on my ThinkPad T420 w/ coreboot upgraded to i7 3630QM, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, and Intel Wifi 6. Only rants I have about it are the original screen being such low quality and replacement costing a lot compared to the value of the machine. Also that certain programs really do not run well or at all in Wine, but hopefully that will improve with time and lightweight VMs can cover my needs until then.
