Rants etc.....

Had bought a couple different automated cat litter boxes in august. But one of my cats didn't want to use it so I ordered another different style one. 2 weeks outside return window first one started having issue. The drum would climb upwards on the drive side and then fall back down in a different place. Adding a lot of lube to the walls around the bearing stopped this.

Cleaning it the other day and I notice the cats have torn up the liner. Can't buy a replacement. Trying out duct tape lol. But then the POS will not spin drum at all. The drive gear just free spins . There are a million screws to take the whole litter box apart before i can see if it is something I can fix or not.

Last week there was an Air Miles promo, with 30% back in points. Thought it ran until Sunday. Go to grab a Litter Robot 4 on Sunday, but realized the promo ended on Friday. :(

Meanwhile the 2nd litter box I ordered, which I absolutely questioned the purchase at the time, runs perfectly. Besides the app being crap. It is a workhorse.

We have a litter robot. My wife bought the extended warranty. She has replaced so many parts to the point she probably built 3 of them over time. But it works well, when it's not broken, and the cats use it. Same thing with Dyson vaccums. Replaced so many parts that she probably built 3 of those as well.

These kind of things a warranty is almost a must.

My dyson vacuum is like 20-ish years old now...
-The slip ring on the hose I have had to take apart a couple times and bend the pins out to ensure better contact (no parts just time)
-The brush in the motorhead I have replaced 2-3 times (brushes worn out over time and the spinning contact surface, kind of a consumable when you have it that long)
-Oldest is vacuuming now and she has broken a few bits and pieces of plastic just from being rough with it but overall holding up
-Plug end got yoinked on one too many times so it has a bright yellow plug end from princess auto on the cord now

With some of the wear and tear it is showing it is probably getting pretty close to the point where I finally retire it but for 20 years of regular usage I'm honestly pretty impressed that is has held up as well as it has.

Took the litter box apart, and it wasn't easy. And the drive gears are not damaged unless its inside the worm drive mechanism, which would be metal likely. So the motor just doesn't have enough torque?

Time to OC my litter box? Could swap out 12V motor for a 24V one. Then use a mosfet board and a 2nd 24V PSU to power motor. Hmm...

EDIT: Won't be able to use a mosfet, but maybe a boost converter, and upgrade the original 12V PSU.

EDIT2: Reassembled it and it 'works' still. But there is definitely something wrong w/ the drive motor. I can spin the drum of my litter box with my hand, which shouldn't be possible.

Found a motor I really like from OMC, but their shipping is so expensive. :(

So looking for other options.

Oh boy, I am finally done snow blowing today started at 730, too many older neighbours who needed my help.

I avoid those automatic litter boxes. I just use the clumping cat litter and clean it myself, but we only have one cat, so no big deal, can't imagine having to mod my little box to make it work right, but does sound very much like a Lowfat thing to do lol

Maybe look at NEMA stepper motor conversion? NEMA 17 pretty plentiful and not overly expensive. Probably wrong form factor but probably be able to make it work.

Maybe my wife just likes free stuff or is incredibly hard on things. Take your pick. lol

Plus ours are stick vacuums for probably not as robust.

That is beyond my capabilities. I do not know how you could convert a 2 wire DC motor to work w/ a stepper.

As for Dyson, my older DC37 vacuum works good. The upright Animal Ball 2 I had for a while was just terrible tho. Designed by an idiot.

I have 2 Dyson air purifiers. One works but can't get the damn thing to work with the app. Just end endless loop of having to take it apart to reach the stupid serial number. The other is a humdiifer / purifier. Thinks the tank isn't installed. Buy a new pump body and it does the same thing. And hell if I can figure out how to take it apart to see if I can see an issue w/ the control board.
