Rants etc.....

OMG in 2026 why can't I lock or disable my laptop keyboard while allowing an external keyboard to function normally? Haven't any of the designers at Microsoft had a cat?

edit: and no I don't want to have to uninstall the driver as sometimes I still use certain function keys on the laptop or use it without an external keyboard... smh. They have a toggle for the touch pad, but nothing for the keyboard.

I've always found it ridiculous that the only way to get fair compensation out of an insurance company is through a lawyer. My daughter was injured (pedestrian) as the result of clear fault by one driver yet her compensation took 2+ years and only after a lawyer was involved (thus eating up a good portion of the settlement).
BC moved to no fault auto insurance, now you can't go that route. I'm all for saying less money in the lawyers pocket, even if it means buyers have to get additional insurance to top up what is offered. I think the biggest problem for consumers is we can't possibly understand the legal language of the contracts we enter for insurance and the insurance companies have no obligation to "pre-qualify" you. Ever since they've been able to say "non self disclosure of any pre-existing conditions may void this policy" it's been a huge problem for consumers.

I had a house insurance claim 2 years ago and lost $50k because I wasn't careful enough when buying my policy to understand that loss of rent (basement suite) during an insurance claim is not covered unless you add that premium to your plan. I also remember during the Slave Lake fire back in 2011 a lot of homeowners didn't have enough coverage for alternate accommodations while their house got rebuilt. Some people had to wait over 2 years to get their home and all the rent in town was like "oh it's free because insurance is paying for it, so I'll charge you $5,500." You only have a fixed limit on how much they'll pay for accommodations until your house is rebuilt.

Heard a loud snap sound from my dishwasher when opening it and now the door falls heavily and without control.

Going to assume there's a spring and maybe a cam or cable of some kind that controls it. I'm going to assume this is an easy fix, but still need to remove the darn thing to identify which parts are broken and what needs replacing.

Just had essentially the same thing happen, although for me I didn't notice a loud snap, just that the door no longer has resistance to falling straight down.

Fortunately for me, the dishwasher's model number led me to the spring's part number as well as a great little video on how to replace it.

In my case it wasn't even the spring but a little plastic linkage. Ended up being an expensive part for what could have been a $1 3D print, but such are appliance parts.

I should just take the plunge and look into learning how to do 3d or resin printing, but I'm busy enough as is.

Not really a rant but a 'near miss' unfortunately.

Had set up a FB account to place a WTB ad for a large Sony curved trinitron like the KV-35XBR48 and after about a dozen people who can't read messaging me saying they want it (WTB is apparently a lost thing and no one reads the ad clearly saying I want to buy), someone messaged me saying he had one and if the guy that wanted it didn't show up I'd be welcome to it.

Unfortunately said guy did show up so no 35" curved Trinitron CRT for me. Not a big deal but it would have been cool to have one to work on.

I was lucky enough that the linkage was fine. 2 Springs were less than $15 while a single spring with the plastic link was $50. I had a look at replacement trays while I was at it (ours are getting old and rusty in a couple of spots) but replacing both upper and lower would be close to $500.... at that point might as well bite the bullet and buy a new dishwasher.
