Has anyone's phones been able to use this feature using normal method (no hacks)? If yes, what carrier are you with and what messaging app did you use? My xiaomi miA1 says the feature is not supported, but people on public mobile boards says it does work.

I'm curious how much data and battery juice the feature uses when it's on and working.

Most things are not built on polling logic anymore but something called push. Google has called it GCM (google cloud messaging) in the past and upgraded it to FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging) and there are equivalents for ios as well.

Polling logic will eat batteries and bandwidth because it keeps going out to a server asking "do you have naything for me" and a minute later "do you have anything for me" eating a bit of data and power each time.

Push is "hey i'm going to keep my ears open wake me up when something happens"
