I don't think it really matters. do you want something with a soft or hard surface?

if soft, make sure the edges are stitched. for hard...I have zero experience; I suspect they are more a niche item now that soft ones dominate everywhere you look.

note, if you eat at your desk the cloth one will need frequent washing. best to do by hand, not in the machines...mine fell apart quickly.

Not really such as distinction, ball mice have been gone for so long any mouse pad in the pad 15+ years was made for a laser mouse.

Most optical mice these days don't require a mouse pad at all and will work on the desk surface assuming it isn't glass or something similar. Some even work on glass but that isn't consistent in my experience. Apple claims that their laser tracking is even more sensitive and responsive on more surfaces than traditional optical mice, so you are likely fine without any mouse pad, unless you don't like the feel of that.

I always like to link the one below in these discussions because it does work well if you want something for just the cost of paper and some ink, and the FAQs are worth reading for a chuckle I've used this in the past when I've had mice that wouldn't work on particularly finicky or unique desk surfaces. Works better if you tape it to the desk surface. That's in the instructions
