So I just updated my FanControl and noticed it had a replacement for WinRing0. A bit annoying to deal with because it might conflict with WinRing0 if you still have it installed. In my case, I was using OpenRGB and uninstalling that doesn't remove WinRing0.
  • Uninstall all software that use WinRing0
  • Boot into Safe Mode, manually remove from drivers folder
  • Load RegEdit and remove any entry with WinRing0
  • Reboot
  • Uninstall all software that use PawnIO and reinstall
    • You could install PawnIO separately first then install FanControl
For FanControl, I lost some of my fan names and end up having to re-calibrate before it would detect all my fan headers again.

I was researching a while ago about WinRing0 and Defender flagging programs I was using because it was using it. It was an interesting little rabbit hole.

One of the programs I just uninstalled, wasn't important, but the other was my Base Camp software for Everest keyboard. I ended up going back and forth with their tech guys and they ended up publishing some updated libs for Base Camp that resolved the issue, with written assurances they weren't doing anything sneaky. It hasn't resulted in an issue with Defender since, so perhaps they switched to an alternative to WinRing0 too.

Some multiplayer games anticheat systems will ban you if PawnIO is present on your system - something to be mindful of. The creator of FanControl did not want to implement PawnIO but relented when it was clear WinRing0 was no longer an option and never would be again.
