Replacing my system from 2007 - Wrong RAM for Mobo ordered?

Hello,

Been so long since I've been to these forums I forgot my password for my original account, and definitely no longer have the same email... anywho on to the question with a little Grey Bearded rambling.

I haven't been really keeping up with tech, as you can see in the title. The system I built back in 2007 is finally ready to retire and just become a youtube/TV watching foot heater, as I have truly neglected it over the last few years, so all the fans other than on the vid card are dead and I just can't justify spending the pittance of cash replacing those when this system really doesn't work for gaming anymore.

FYI the last system I physically put together was 11 years ago for my friends 10-year-old.

I've gone with what I feel should get me at least 5 years before thinking I need to replace the CPU and Vid Card, but I think I may have ordered the wrong RAM for the intended mobo, and the RAM I wanted I can't find anywhere online.

The Mobo I went with is the MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk, and the RAM is the Patriot Viper Extreme 5 PVXR532G6030KM.

I'm certain it's EXPO compliant, I'm just curious if anyone knows how stable this RAM will be with this Mobo as it isn't on the QVL, and I will be OC'ing the CPU, and I'm hoping to OC the RAM as well and play with the timings, as my brain is still used to DDR 3 speeds with tight CL 5, 7, 7, 8 timings. Not CL 30, 40, 40, 70 base timings for RAM like this particular set of sticks.

Spec's of new items for build;

Ryzen 7 9700x (upgrading later in life)
MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk Wifi
Patriot Viper Extreme 5 PVXR532G6030KM (64 gigs is unnecessary imo)
Thermal Right Peerless Assassin 120 SE
Asus 9070xt 16gb
Corsair RM1000x (over kill, but for future upgrades, and Gods knows what the power draw of Vid Cards in 10 years will be).

Carry over/Spares around the house:

1 - Coolermaster 690 Advanced 2
1 - Samsung 990V 500gb M.2 (older version, think it's a 2, was given to me) for windows.
1 - Sandisk Ultra 3D 1 TB SATA (will be replaced with 1 TB M.2 in a couple years, as at 89% health)
2 - Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB

It should be fine. No one really sticks to QVL here but I don't OC RAM, I just use them as stock as it barely gives you any performance. At these trying times, I wouldn't risk mucking around with it.

Did the RAM cost more than the rest of the components? :ROFLMAO:

Should be fine though, but I think you might be a bit disappointed as far as overclocking goes these days compared to 18 years ago. Make sure you read up as these modern CPUs are much different and don't really offer a ton of headroom.

looks like it will be a solid build. Put the ram in, enable expo (if it’s supported), and xmp if it’s not…enjoy.

Overclocking techniques have changed a lot for cpus and gpus, old techniques don’t work or aren’t optimal, and the gains are much smaller. For ram overclocking, if you aren’t willing to put tons of time in and deal with occasional random issues as you refine things, then just leave it at expo/xmp. If you are going to play with any of that, then let us know for some starting tips.

Second most @ 499.99 EWWWW!!! The 9070xt @ 749 bucks was also a bit of a swallow.

I get it on the OC's though. You can only OC to the weakest core, and the more core's the less gain per hertz. But I am thinking I should be able to push the 9700x to at least 5.8 with no issues on the Air cooler, but I won't know until I have both in hand. If I can't then well boo but no biggie.

I come from the days of reading the mobo specs to determine which transistors and resistors to short with a paperclip while the power was on to the mobo for OC'ing, wrong pin touched, dead board. I have the patience lol!

I'm looking forward to seeing the BIOS to see how much freedom I have with the RAM, If I can get to a CL 28, 38, 38, 70 cool beans. I am trying to dumb down the new terms of MT/s (Multithreads per Second, whatever it is) into GB/s and C: 30+ into CL 8+ for RAM and go from there. I certainly have some reading to do this weekend though.

I have a MSI X870 gaming it works well with 2 x 32 Gb of ram . In Star Citizen I am having 56 % of ram used . Modern games are ram hogs . :)
It's only utilizing 56% of your RAM though. so 44% is redundant memory sitting around like someone that plays on their phone all day at work, doing nothing and going home. I would prefer my RAM running at an average of 95% usage, and an overage of 3%, as that isn't going really affect my gaming with a 3% lossage in very very seldom situations. That's just me though, wanting my RAM maxed for efficiency.

I don't think I could "kill" my RAM, but I will take what you've said with conscience. One step at a time, don't max out, and tread back from there from the non-post screen.
