GN bought a 7900X3D and it didn't impress. This is concerning in a lot of ways for AMD, and the 7800X3D being held until April makes me wonder how that will perform. One big issue with the 7800X3D will be the frequency. I hope some reviewers disable half the cores on the 7950X3D but then lock the freq of the other CCD to a max of 5.0 GHz. We'll see, I guess.

The GN 7950x review does cover the fact that it parks the non-3d cores in gaming workloads if you have the correct drivers installed. I think thats the closest we will see to a fake 7800x3d estimation until it launches.

I saw somnetihng about the iGPU on the 7950X3D being 3 - 4x faster than the non-3D variant. also, not sure how much of a difference it would / could make, but the 3D variants seem to use less power and run lower temperatures as well.

A different path on this review. They previously found Zen4 was very memory sensitive, but the X3D parts are way less sensitive to it. Faster still helps, but not as critical.

It's really only a 6 core CPU, I think that's to be expected? Probably why they never bothered doing this previously either...

I think in the case of the 7950X3D, the 3D CCD tops out at ~5.2GHz, so it's really only ~200MHz faster than what the 7800X3D will do. I think gaming performance will be pretty similar between them as both are 8 cores.

all the discussion of the advantages the 3D memory provide are interesting...all sorts of niche things like the 400% boost in iGPU performance, total lower power consumption for same / better performance than the non-3D model and now this, lower memory sensitivity and without a doubt it has to do with the massive onboard cache these Zen4 chips have!

Level 1 Tech has a great video on core parking. He dives deep into the subject and gives a great explanation.

Gosh that was very interesting. I forgot how much I like his content. No silliness, no gimmicks, just chock full of detailed and accurate information. Thanks for posting that one @Dwayne ! I think it may even deserve watching more than once.

YW, I like his channel, though his enterprise stuff is beyond my most recent experience.

I think I might get a 7800x3d when it comes out. While it is slower in some games compared to Intel but in the games that really need a fast CPU the x3d is significantly faster. Too bad that almost every reviewer doesn't benchmark CPU heavy games though. Games like Factorio, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron 4, Rimworld, ect show massive gains with x3d but sadly most of those games don't get benchmarks from the major reviewers.
