Sorry about Ottawa (From an American)

We're having a cultural crisis right now in the States. The book banning thing is nuts. There's a whole faction of people in this country that use Religion as an excuse for extremely persecutory action. Banning Maus was nuts. American history has been so heaving white washed since our inception that most people here don't even know we had interment camps for Japanese Americans in WWII.
It's a funny thing about history. We are having a struggle with it in Canada now as well. Lots of cultures and countries are I think.

We have this big push in culture now to cancel or erase history. But I personally don't think that's the right choice. History is what it is, and no race, religion, country, people, whatever have a completely clean or good history. Not to mention the fact that the definition of "clean" and "good" changes as our cultures continue to change.

I think the unfortunate impact from our "cancel culture" that is ever more powerful these days is that we are losing the ability to discuss, debate, reconcile, and even just agree to disagree when that is the best we can manage on differences of thought and opinion.

That saying "Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" (Winston Churchill version) certainly seems to be lost on those who just want everything they don't agree with to be silenced or disappear. And that extends to some individuals on all sides of the various debates raging these days.

Very well said.

Honestly what disturbs me the most is the acceptance of hate I have seen. This comes from both sides.

But really whether or not you agree with the convoy or mandates or vaccines or frankly anything else, that is not an excuse to call for the freezing to death of kids/babies (yes I have seen this more than once). It is that kind of putrid messages I see that people want to agree with, like the death to all unvaxxed stuff. And I have seen many comments from the other side (although not much saying they should die) but it needs to stop.

We are in a time where if you disagree with the current popular narrative you are shunned and removed from public view. This includes many doctors and scientists and other health care workers. The second you silence one side you will not ever find the truth. Truth and facts only come from open and honest discussions. If you can't listen to other viewpoints you are the problem, not the other viewpoint.

I'm not going to say what side I fall on but I get the feeling that people will be able to figure it out somewhat.

My final words on this:
Just be nice and don't fall into the spiral of hate, that will never help anyone and only makes things worse.

These border blockages appear to be harming the people they claim to be fighting for. I can't even figure out if those that are blocking the border are even part of the same group in Ottawa.

Now that Ontario has issued State of Emergency though I guess we'll see what happens over the next few days.

I do this monthly posting on my FB account called "Random Musings" that covers current topics of interest. I'm cross posting this months here as I feel it's relevant to this discussion. Let me know what you think.

Random Musings: On Critical Race Theory

Ok, here we go. Once again something that has been misunderstood by a segment of the population has been co-opted into a new moral panic by those who are ignorant of what it is exactly they're fearing. We did this with Heavy Metal music, Rap, Dungeons and Dragons, books, and a whole litany of other pieces of art and history. It's never worked then, it's not going to work now. I encourage anyone who thinks it will to look up the Streisand Effect.

I get it. You don't want to be made to feel guilty for something you didn't do. No one does. But here's the rub, just because you don't want to feel guilty doesn't mean that history didn't happen. You can put "Unfavorable to the South" in front of as many books as you like, history is history. It happened. I'm sure the Persians didn't want to talk about Thermopylae either. You cannot ignore and rewrite history to fit your narrative then cry "but why are things this way!?!"

The fact of the matter is this, white colonialists are directly responsible for the complete destruction of dozens of indigenous nations in North America. White colonialists are responsible for the slave trade starting and being maintained in North America. White American's are responsible for redlining communities to segregate People of Color into their own communities and when those communities started to thrive destroying them to show people of color their "place." White American's are responsible for countless lynching's and murders of people of color for perceived slights. White American's are responsible for erecting monuments to seditionists and traitors in the 1950's South as a means of psychological warfare against People of Color. White American's are responsible for directing the narrative of history taught to our children. White American's are responsible for gerrymandering voting districts to suppress People of Color's right to vote. White American's are responsible for placing Japanese Americans into concentration camps.

No one is saying YOU PERSONALLY are responsible for any of this. Maybe you're a terrible human and actually ARE responsible for some of it, but just because you are a particular color doesn't mean you're inherently guilty of a crime.

Now there's a thought. Maybe the reason a portion of our population is panicking and up in arms right now is because the very thing we've been doing for generations to People of Color is now being done to us. You don't like it? Neither do the oppressed people who have been demonized for generations because of a skin pigmentation. Philando Castile was a law abiding citizen, exercising his Second Amendment Rights like a good conservative, in a car with his girlfriend and children. He had committed no crime and was pulled over simply because he "looked like" someone who was suspected of committing a crime. He volunteered that he was lawfully carrying a concealed firearm, which he was not legally required to do. He was civil, polite, and honest. In return he was shot multiple times by someone who should have never been in a position of authority.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” - George Santayana

If we ignore or repress our history as a human species, not Whites, Blacks, Latinos, etc, we can never comes to terms with it. If we cannot come to terms with it we will always misunderstand why things are the way they are. You don't like feeling like the bad guy? Good, don't be that guy (or gal, I'm not predigested)! You're not responsible for the actions of your ancestors. You are responsible for your actions today. Ignoring the actions of your ancestors makes you no better than the people who perpetrated those actions. My ancestors perpetrated one of the greatest human rights violations in recorded history, the Holocaust. Am I personally responsible for that? No. But I AM responsible for remembering it happened, teaching my children about it, and working to ensure nothing like that ever happens again.

Race is a social convention, not a scientific one. We are all one species, just with different traits. To hate someone because of their color or origin is to hate yourself. Oppressing someone does not elevate you, it only shows the failures in your character.

We are all HUMAN. Any other belief is just White Washing.

I'm just sayin...

Basic has changed a great deal from my understanding, but I certainly hope you're right! :)
My brother just went through basic training and is currently in the navy. They have strict rules on engagement and would get severe punishment if they broke those rules.

With that said they have not been ordered to go to Ottawa and are told not to provide support nor condemnation. The military is to remain neutral. They are also told to stay away from the area of the protest to avoid either causing a panic or to look like they are showing support.

From what I have heard police from all over the province are heading to Ottawa so it looks like the police will be taking action in the coming days. The police have also surrounded the blockade in Windsor and might be breaking that up soon. There are heavily armed police with also armored vehicles there now at the blockade.

It is nice to see that most here are against this as it has damaged my sanity.

Anyone wishing for the death of any person/child/pet/business needs to stop and take a long look in the mirror cause you need help. Since when did it become normal to hate someone cause they don't agree with you or your politics that's what I don't get or like.

The only time I think the military should be used within their own country is when there digging Toronto out of a snowstorm.

PS Geezer, science is not a religion its a tool just like a hammer or screw driver used properly can do great things when miss used can hurt lots of people.

Metaphorically speaking....Just the way I was trying to make a point.
People shouldn't believe in faith-based ideas or religion but turn to proven fact courtesy of science! Make science their true what-not......
