Here is a good up-to-date (for now) getting started video. Gives a good starting assessment of what to do in game with alpha 4.0.
Now... full disclosure: as of today they are having some trouble with 4.0_Preview release and some things are disabled
but they'll get that sorted. Others I know have been playing without too many issues but I've had limited success with 4.0. They are still putting out updates, but I think that will slow as they have a break for Christmas.
Anyway, if you have the "how do I get started?" or "what can I actually do in game?" questions this video answers some of that well without getting too deep in the weeds. He doesn't cover everything you can do in this video, but it's enough I think.

Yeah, the 4.0_Preview is definitely still a work in progress. Some people are having good luck, some people (me included) not so much. 4.0.1 had a very large list of fixes so that'll sort things out. What I did get to do was impressive, just need less buginessness4.0.1 is in PTU . I played a little bit in Stanton . I had server errors and my ship went threw walls . Pyro may be more stable . All's good .

Lots of stuff fixed in the 4.0.1 patch, with hotfixes going in daily. Good to see!4.01 is Live its working good .
Anyone wants to try its free fly on the 31 of Jan.

I got in last night to choose my home location and such and got in fine, but didn't have time to do anything except check my inventory. Some people have been having inventory issues but mine all looked fine. I had "Best" server selected, but I likely ended up on a US server. Can you switch to another region? Depending on what time you play, I've had good success in previous patches playing on the AUS servers.
