Some tips from my recent play:yep pilot error most of the time .
1. Don't forget to switch out of Quantum/Flight mode so you slow to normal speeds. If you stay in that mode and are zipping along up over 1000 you'll definitely pancake.
2. Know where your speed brake button is bound to!
3. If you have the default controls settings, put your gear out if you are going too fast. That will immediately reduce your speed and help a lot when maneuvering for landings, getting in through hanger doors, around buildings, etc.
