With regards to the shielded cargo, yes it helps (not guaranteed) to pass the scans. One of the skills helps as well if I recall, and you can also purchase (same places as shielded cargo) scan jammers that help even further.

So if you have it like me then you have a 90% chance to get through the scans with contraband. Unless you forget to transfer it to the ships storage, if you have it on you then you will get busted.

With regards to costs, you can play around all you want while in the ship builder, you only pay when confirming the changes at the end. And the biggest tip I can give, save before you change your ship, just in case you end up hating the interior or something.

A few reviewers for ship building said that the Scan Jammers and Shielded Cargo does not stack.
I wonder if they are right or not. I was under the impression you use one or the other but not both.

I was fairly sure they did. I'll test tonight since I have both.

Ok so it works like this:

Shielded cargo bays are a must, without it you have 0% chance from what I have seen.
Once you have it then how much it protects you depends on how full it is.

This is mine when I have no jammers and my deception skill is at 1. I have 30 mass of contraband and the shielded container holds 960.

And adding just the one jammer (the highest end one that is)

And then if you max out Deception that is supposed to help by another 50% you get this

Yup exactly the same. So my guess without testing much more would be that the jammers basically take the place of the Deception perk, at least when it comes to the contraband. Or maybe 90% is the max and if I filled up with more contraband and got closer to my max it would help then.

Awesome, okay that's good to know. Once they patch out my way of getting past the scanners I'll have to use those items. Goes to show you all the info on the internet is not always accurate.

Ok here is a little bit more info.

So Deception does help and so does the jammer. The key is that it appears as 90% is the max.

I loaded up my storage so I had 936 mass in my 960 storage.

This is with deception at 1 and with the jammer

And then this is the exact same setup but with deception at max level.

Also I just remembered that I actually have two jammers but I highly doubt they stack, I just do it to be symmetrical. But I will try to test that as well I suppose.

Update:

Tested without any jammers and deception at 1 with the full cargo and I get only 37% chance to evade. Add a jammer and like before 56%. Add a second jammer and still 56%. So jammers do not stack, but they do affect things along with the deception perk and how full your shielded cargo is.

Hope that helps.

That does actually, its good info to have because a couple of the ship builder youtubers and such were saying it was one or the other. It is good to know you can use both to get the best result possible.
Thought knowing Bethesda RNG I'd hit the 10% Every. Single. Time.

Now I just have to remember to load the previous save. I really don't need to have 300 pieces of stolen art on my ship.

Now if I could decorate my ship with them that would be different.

I hear you there.

The amount of harvested organs I've had at times is slightly disturbing. Yet fun.

I think I need help.

That is a lot of testing @ipaine ! Thanks! And the fact that 90% is the max makes sense to me. Couldn't have 100% chance of evade. That wouldn't be "realistic" and would remove all chance.
