my friend rents his tank from Enbridge and it's like 20-30 bucks a month for a gas unit, electrical ones are under 20 from those I have talked to.

I don't understand why anyone would rent them unless you have no choice. but may be a good source of long-term income, you would have to get a lot of them out there or have a lot of free cash cause under the contract when the tank fails you have to replace it ASAP.

IMHO its more to let Enbridge sell gas.

This is one company.

I don't think Enbridge is in the business of rentals or servicing anymore? Enercare and Reliance are probably the "common" ones now.

But yeah, the Ford government is definitely helping prop up Enbridge to keep natural gas in all new homes in Ontario. Originally there was plans to remove the requirement for gas since everything can be heat pumps now, or to pass the development fees onto the builder directly. But the Ontario government reversed that. Must be some collusion with these rental companies too

Yep But if brakes they replace it no extra charge . :)

Same deal once it's getting close to the insurance industry standard replacement requirement (14 yrs?). Simple call and they're on site replacing it in a timely manner.

For us, @ $8 / month it's a no-brainer. I think they're somewhere between $500 and $700 for the tank alone so maybe $800 - $1000 installed?

Replacement electric water heaters are around $1200-1400 here, had mine done last year. My sister just got a quote for $2200 for a gas one. BC is going to ban gas ones starting in 2030 provincewide, Vancouver is starting next year. You will have to replace a gas one with an electric one when it fails or your insurance company makes you change it.

Forcing electric is kind of weird to be honesty. In some places the power grids are simply not ready for the transition. Alberta's heat wave for example triggered grid advisories because of the increased electrical usage this past week. And I'd skip plain electric for heat pump if I was forced into that decision.

It's kinda dumb considering an HE tank heats 9 times faster than electric. Electric tanks are terribly inefficient.

An HE tank heats in about 20 minutes compared to 2-3 hours on electric of the same capacity. 40gal is 3000 watts. 60 gal is 4500 watts. The worst part is the electric tanks don't fire both elements at the same time.

Heat pump water heaters are off the charts expensive too.

If I buy bulk (4 plus) a 40 gal is 675+ taxes. To the customer its 964 plus taxes and minimum 5 hours labour @115/hour plus parts if needed.

Actually, that's not true - electric tanks are 100% efficient, in that 100% of the electricity that's going in is being converted to heat - it's just that they're limited to using 18.8 amps, and there's only so fast 18.8 amps of electricity will heat water.

Gas, on the other hand, has a much higher capacity to heat, so it heats faster. But it's less efficient, even the high efficiency HWT's lose some energy up the chimney.

Also, here is a great explanation r.e. the two heating elements, and how/why they work.
