One silver lining is my home computer is not used for any productivity applications, it's mainly gaming and daily driving.

I don't know if you're interested in a slightly older platform, but one of these combos (paired with a decent set of memory + an NVME) would get the PC side done for around $500.

I am definitely looking for something on a newer platform plus some of the early horror stories of Gen 11 has me wanting to avoid it like the plague too.

Well time to revive this thread, updating the initial post to reflect what I 'think' I might be going with for a new build (as I was waiting for Black Friday sales).

Case wise, I think these 3 are good but won't break the bank:
  • Corsair 4000D Airflow (I'm using this one)
  • Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh
  • Lian Li Lancool 215 or 216

Also not sure if I would be better off spending the on average 150$ more over an XTX to get a RTX 4080...

Don't bother with 4080 right now when S is around the corner. If you don't need CUDA then AMD is good too. If you look at the performance numbers, the XTX is actually fairly close to 4080 for $150 less. Someone actually posted some personal benchmarks.

Though that is also rumours about the Supers that we don't know if/when those may come out of the 4xxx series too.
