well, I would love to know how you monitor your power usage ( don't know if you have a solar setup/whole house battery ) I assumed you're on city power.

One upgrade I am so glad we did the month after we bought our home was central air, our house is 1700+ sq feet and our Trane 2-ton unit cools the house down nicely, mind you we tend to keep it much higher than 17c because of the high humidity we have to deal with in Muskoka ( its a swamp ) dew point normally for us is in the 18-22c range so I have our AC set to keep the whole house at 24c all summer long and it only adds about 30-40 a top of our monthly hydro bill. we have good insulation I think r80+ in the attic and R25 in the walls.
does your power utility have an app that would let you monitor your total household power consumption? my buddy in QC does and that's how he monitors something new when its been added to the house.

So my drywall guy showed up this morning for the repair in my basement. He's coming back tomorrow, Friday and then Monday to do the final polish. I thought this was going to be a 2 - 3 week process. I'll be painting next Tuesday night, might have my man-cave back by Labour Day!

I think there are videos out there showing just how fast drywall can go up now. heck...I think there might even be contests now too!

makes me wonder if the quality of the work / product is still as good as when it took longer though...

Drywall is drywall..... Framing might be a bit different these days now that they've got those modular metal studs, but I don't think drywall has changed. One of the big things is how skilled the worker is at mudding after the fact.

I have seen people mention that more modern lightweight drywall panels are actually not quite as durable as the regular weight stuff. But otherwise an experienced drywaller has also learnt how much mud is not enough vs too much. What results in having to do extra coats vs lots of sanding to make it look good. Can save a lot of labour hours if you can get that balance just right.

I tend to go a little light as I'd rather just do another coat once it drys than do a whole bunch of sanding. There is also fast drying muds etc, I keep a small jar of 15 minute mud for missed pinholes etc as it is sandable/paintable within 15 minutes but it is expensive. But if i could find that better balance of just adding a bit more so I don't need to do as many coats I'd get some of those tasks done sooner.

Proper screw gun also saves a whole bunch of time hanging drywall. (not a drywaller but I keep having to fix walls from tenants damaging stuff etc)

And this is why I'm not doing it. I've been in construction for over 25 years, done a bit before, it's one of the jobs where it's worth it to pay someone to do it. Some friends of ours own a drywall business, they sent a guy that has 30 years experience. Took him under an hour to board, half hour to tape and fill screw holes. Says each visit for the next trips will be a half hour to sand and fill. It would have taken me 3-4 hours to board, and forever to fill and sand. And then I'd have to notice each imperfection each time I went in the room. One thing about getting older is that I now forget about the paint marks where my wife hit the ceiling with the roller and I had to touch it up (after a couple of years). 😁

Almost always buy my big electronics from Visions. For a while I was always buying their extended warranty. I had bought a Samsung Plasma w/ a 7 year warranty. Last year they sold them. A few lines started to develop on the screen after about 6.5 years. Took it in and obviously they can't fix a screen that hasn't been made in forever. So I got a new TV. Bought extended warranty on it. Unfortunately they only offer 5 years. Which expired 22 days ago and I never used it. Visions does offer a rebate for the amount of the warranty if not used and you put a claim in within 90 days. Which this is the first time I've ever remembered to do so. So should be getting a $170 in-store rebate. Only downside is you can only redeem for half the worth. So I'll need to spend $170 in store. :(

Will have another $389 rebate coming @ the end of the year, meaning I'll 'need' to spend $400 then too! Said TV warranty is for has sat in the box for the last 2 years. :cautious:

Upgraded to Win 11 this week. Lots of stuff I don't like. But being able to use an Android phone as a webcam is pretty damn slick. I was going to buy a USB capture card so I could use my Sony mirrorless (which hadn't been turned on in years). But the quality using Android phone was really good. Just need to figure out how to mount it above my tv somehow.
