my son-in-law and I are thinking about giving it a go. I have wanted to do this for ages, but watching season 9 of Forged in Fire, it's lit up the idea again.
have any of you made a blade by hand?

Nope but I've cut myself lots of times. I've been eyeballing a knife maker from Japan. A regular chef knife from him goes for about 12-1500 bucks.my son-in-law and I are thinking about giving it a go. Yes. Just a few small custom blades for wood working, wood carving & a couple dull ones used to score paper for folding. I was able to get a used newspaper cutting blade for the metal. But that was a while ago. Finally getting my little workshop re-organized and going through all the things that I never finished, including a couple of carvings.my son-in-law and I are thinking about giving it a go. how did you make these blades? did you buy blanks or re-task some other kind of high carbon steel you had about?Yes. it's because they're handmade...or hand finished. I've been following the several knife / blade subreddits for years now and what's required to get that good is crazy! much kudos to them all!
Metal from a newspaper cutter/blade? not sure of the terminology - see pic - not sure of the metal but it's of good quality. Quite a few years ago (1980s) I needed curved blades for carving a merlin falcon my only bird carving, where carving chisels were not much use. Plus the paper scoring tool for folding paper (paper sculpture - 2005). Haven't needed to make other knives or blades since. Just getting back to woodworking, woodcarving to finish off several projects I wasn't able to complete, etc.@clshades I wasn't thinking about kitchen knives as much as I was thinking about EDC blades and such, but good nudge that reminds me about kitchen blades. that said, if you're looking for a high-quality blade, check out www.Knifewear.com. they're a knife reseller with 5 stores across Canada, so you may even be able to walk in and consult with one of their experts. they have a YouTube channel too, so you might want to check that out as well.![]()

On and off since early 80s. Got into it in a weird way. When insulating my house, I discovered an empty space, large enough for a small closet. So I cut a hole for a doorway to insulate it and finished it off. A visitor noticed the hole and asked what I was going to do and, out of nowhere, I said, "I'm going to carve a door." So somehow I managed to assemble a door and relief carve it without much woodworking tools and a few carving tools I got. Haven't had much time to carve in the last 15 years or so and finally getting back into woodworking again.nice falcon!
how long have you been carving? may I ask what got you into it?
