I use my slower SSD for my OS as well. In my case I partitioned my 2TB ADATA SX8200 Pro, 100GB for OS, then the rest for Users folder, documents, etc. Then a 2TB SN850 for Apps and Games.

Close enough to make you wanna love me !
SInce the last post to this thread was almost a month ago, I would suggest that anyone interested in buying Gen 4 drives, look NOW, cause the prices are dropping like rocks :)

to wit: I just got several 4TB WD 850x's from da Zon for $238, and also a bunch of 2TB models for less than 1/2 of that, some from da Zon and the rest direct from WD... some were for me personally, the others were for client builds/upgrades...

Note that these were purchased in the US, from the US stores, so your deals up yonder might not be as good, but still worth a look-see :)

And YES, these drives scream and are faster than stink on a freshly hatched pile of doggypoo :D

We've been seeing some really decent deals here in Canada as well. IIRC it was around the $300 mark for 4TB 850s here which is roughly equivalent to what you paid.

Higher capacity NVMe drives have certainly been hitting some crazy ATL pricing of late.

So using default, set for NVMe, my old drive, PCI-e 3.0:

The new drive, PCI-e 4.0. Pretty astounding difference.

Although I may not plunge in and move everything to the new, seeing the speed difference does make me wonder about running anything on the old one! lol

Lastly, just for comparison, my newest SATA6 SSD. This is where most of my games lived before the new SSD:

Resurrecting this, but I FINALLY got around to cloning the HP EX920 onto the WD SN850X 1TB that I got back in Aug (love Clonezilla Live). On the default settings in CrystalDiskMark on PCI-E 3.0 I am now getting this on the WD. Much better than the first image in the post above of what I was seeing with the HP.

I don't know what was happening with that HP drive, health tools still said it was fine, but something was definitely going wrong with it. And C: drive usage at idle is now back down to nearly zero where the HP always seemed to be off doing something (indexing, etc.) and never getting done. Made things sluggish.

One more comment on performance. It's interesting the things that are affected by a bad performing drive.

I have Edge set to show me the Microsoft photos on the start tab. On the old drive I'd open Edge and it would sit there on a white background or the tab for as much as 5-7 sec I'd say. I of course was blaming Microsoft :)

With the new drive installed Edge and the background photos open and load instantly every time. No lag at all. I wouldn't have immediately attributed that to drive performance, but that's the only change, and the performance change was instant after installing the new WD.
