We're looking into SMRs in Saskatchewan, as well, as a way to get off of coal & gas power. We'll see if that survives the next federal election and changes to the clean electricity regulations.
That said, I'm a fan of the idea overall. It seems like most, if not all, SMRs are designed to shut down in the case of overheat (you need constant power supply to maintain the reaction, rather than the reaction becoming self-sustaining). Seems a safer way of doing things, even if you lose some efficiency in the process. I don't see a lot of other reasonable ways to provide baseload power here long-term.
