KU is where all the LitRPG stuff is, check out the Cradle series if you like Fantasy

I had seen that series while browsing the available titles. I'll give the first one a try and see what I think of it. (I'm usually leery of any series that's more than 3 titles... ;) ).

I will say I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of "classics" I've tried to find in KU. Searches for anything Asimov related are coming up empty as do the riftwar saga or any of the ringworld series books. My hopes of catching up on newer releases for series' that I read back in the '80s / '90s so far haven't been met.

Cradle is so much fun. It is 'progressive fantasy' where the characters level up. All the books are very fast paced.

I'm probably half way through the first one and have to say it's not my cup of tea yet.

Does the whole series adhere the Terry Goodkind / Ayn Rand "everybody in the world is a horrible human being" mindset?

I want to say no... But thinking about it a lot of the characters outside the main group are pretty self serving.

described his books as a "depressing read" due to the series' overarching cynicism, with a weakness being the heroic characters are only likable in comparison with utterly murderous villains.

That's the vibe I'm getting from the first book... the main character is getting through life by being deceitful and cheating to get what he wants. He's only a "hero" in comparison to every other character (including his family) being such shits.....

IMO definitely not.

Lindon is mostly kind to everyone. He only 'cheated' because he himself was cheated due to his clans backassward ways.

I'll keep slogging on then. :)

I did manage to push through Goodkind's "Wizard's First Rule" all the way to the bitter end before I decided I wasn't interested in any more of his books. :)

I'd never read a Goodkind novel after this. Dood seemed like a POS.

I read that article. He said his problem was with the character representation, not the artwork itself. The artwork was commissioned by the publisher and he had made his objection known prior to publication, but was overruled. Seems totally fair ball to me. Most authors would object to their work being misrepresented I suspect.

Edit: The fantasy fiction reader in our house tends to interpret Goodkind's work as comedic.
