After watching the show I thought I'd do a re-read. I'd guess I read the first one... around 2001? I normally only read reference and non-fiction now, probably my first fantasy novel in a decade.

Funnily enough my first impressions are largely good but with a sense of foreboding of the lows to come; Jordan's a talented writer than elaborates on things that I wouldn't think to, but sometimes pivots to an action scene so suddenly and quickly you're not sure why it changed if you happen to miss a single sentence. The world and plot are still interesting and detailed, but having read the series before I know there's a good chance I'll be tempted to drop it somewhere between books 3-6. They become such a slog, overburdened with characters, plot points that seem to go nowhere and the main character basically becoming a fraction of the story for one or two books.

We'll see if I finish them all or abandon ship for a nice easy read on subatomic physics or tertiary geology or something

Math was never a big interest but history is... and finding out what we think we know isn't always true. That there's more to the story that we were told the 1st time. Probably why I like listening to Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story."

I've been reading the military sci-fi opera epic by Jack Campbell. I've got 3 books left..about 10 or so behind me since I started the series in August.
looked at this, and so far through 10 books I'm assuming since it has kep you captive you've enjoyed the reading experience?

Read and finished book two of 'The Wheel of Time'. Forgot how good this one was. Plot really moves, lots of interesting world building and a much stronger ending than book 1. One of the better books in the series IIRC.

I was never able to make it through all 14 (?) books in the series. I think I read maybe 7 or 9 of them? Perhaps I should give them another go now that I'm ahem more mature... :)

very much so. its not super deep or anything and follows a formula very similar to Louis L'Amour, but what's kept me engaged is how the series takes place over centuries...from just after mankind discovered FTL and began to expand to established governments, centuries long warfare, non-human life and all the political shenanigans.

in fact, now that I'm almost at the end of the series, I'm not looking forward to finishing the last book...

Lost Fleet? I kept up with it and it's sequel series for a while but lost interest Looks like I finished the first 14 books. Last one being in 2015. Seems there were 2 more set in the same universe I didn't finish.

I appreciated the proper physics used in combat. Wasn't a fan of the weird religion tho.

the religion bit is different, I chuckle when there's anything to do with it.

and it looks like there are more books to read than the 3 remaining in The Lost Fleet: The Lost Stars.

the Genesis Fleet is the beginning of the story, but comes as a prequel as the books started coming out in the mid-2000's and the GF didn't release until 2017. but looking at the website for all of Jack Campbell's work, the name is an alias though, there are about 28 books / graphic novels and Anthologies for this story line. so there seems to be a lot more for me to read still! :D
