Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme orientation?

I finally received all my parts and I've been slowly putting together my new computer. Today I installed the cpu and the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme heat sink. After reading the rather brief installation instructions, I noticed there was no mention of the proper orientation. Should it go vertical or horizontal? Using common sense, I installed it so that the air would flow front to back. I am using a coolermaster HAF case and an Asus P6T deluxe mobo.

Is this the correct orientation?

the HAF 932 has a super-huge exhaust fan on top, which is where hot air naturally wants to go. So id suggest turning the TRUE to exhaust upwards. Don't forget to leave that "little" rear 120mm running... just at Very low RPMs - and keep the top big fan running fast to make sure you pull the heat away from Everything, not just your CPU, hehe.

But your opinion definitely makes sense ... that top fan is there for a reason so I might as well put it to use.

I mount mine this way... but because I have 2 fans in series blowing into it, with the motherboard fan between it and the rear exhaust fans... so its like a big wind tunnel... if you don't have a fan in front of it like myself, then blowing upwards to the big exhaust fan makes more sense.

The HAF is an easy case to reconfigure. I would suggest running your own test. Set it up one direction and use a prorgam like OCCT to work your rig, or fold with it. record your max,min and average temps. The following week reconfigure and do the same. Then when you have the results, set it up for what works for you the best. Every case, cooler and configuration with different HS can behave differently. Not nessasarily one best set up. Physics can guide us but the true answer can only be determined through trial and error.

I would, and do run mine from front to back. The heat coming off my videocard would make my temps skyrocket if i were to have it facing up. I think it partly depends on what your graphics card heat output is.

I'd have to disagree there. Most videos cards draw their cool air in from "underneath" the card and expell the heat out of the back of the case. And besides that, even using a passive video card (for example) the heat would rise and be pulled through the TRUE whether it was oriented front-to-back or top-to-bottom. But at least if it's oriented top to bottom, you know natural convection is working to help cool both the CPU and the videocard.

That's how I run mine. Best setup, two fans in a Push/Pull config. Like all the other people said here, hot air rises. If you wanted to have it facing the rear exhaust, then I would suggest turning the top fan off, that way you won't disturb the airflow. Beside putting them like remove air faster.

But like people said, do your tests, it's always fun to see the results!
