does anyone make a hard case like Pelican, but it's not waterproof or crush resistant, but provides a level of protection that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I'm looking for something like this to put our 1/16 RC buggies, transmitters and accessories into for storage and transport.

Plano makes many sizes of carrying cases, I bought one for transporting rifles to the range. They are a lot cheaper than Pelican. Look on Amazon or Canadian Tire.

what would I use to under-volt a table fan? I've got an 8" Utilitech from Home Hardware and it's a wee bit too breezy, so I want to under-volt it. what could I put on the cord between the fans and the mains to accomplish this? something like a dimmer light switch or is there something better to consider?

Ideally I think you should be looking at a proper Variac. I doubt a standard dimmer switch is designed for the kind of load an electric motor requires, but I could be wrong.

the first thing that popped into my head was 'potentiometer,' but I haven't a clue what kind of variable resistor I would need to look at for 120v 15A power.

edit - I guess I would want to look at something like this:
