Disney hasn't kicked EA to the curb (yet), but this is a good sign that they're dissatisfied with EA and their 'exclusive' rights to the Star Wars franchise and how they handled it.

I'm guessing by 'open world' they mean MMO?

Think open-world like Far Cry would be more my guess than MMO. Or my hope anyway.

I think it could be either implementation for open world. Given that the team is the one that did The Division 2, I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least an MMO component to it. But single player open world is a very common and popular game type these days. I think single player open world gives a better chance of a deep engaging storyline driven experience, which would be great for Star Wars. Think RDR2 or even Horizon Zero Dawn.

Ubisoft is really good at open world games, be it with a MMO aspect or not. Ghost Recon Wildlands & Breakpoint, all the Far Cry games, all the Assassin Creed games.

Their engine seems well suited to these games so it would just mostly be new assets to build. Their engine even has driving/flying mechanics already too. Always enjoyed flying around in Ghost Recon and Far Cry games. I don't see why they couldn't pull off Star Wars just as well.

I can attest that Ghost Recon was a really good game to play in the open world. And even better with my friends.
