I was wondering about recommending one of the 1G cloud gateways for that very reason, but the "ultra" is $170. The other option (if a person didn't want to go full 2.5G with the max) would be to look at the unifi express which is essentially a wifi 6 AP with a single WAN and Lan port that runs the network app. The biggest problem I see with the express (aside from the 1G ports) is that it's limited to 4 more unifi network devices.
I think he'd pretty much end up with the same setup you have...

@clshades, what sort of Internet do you have? Any existing router/WiFi setup or just using the provided gear?

If you had to buy today, I'd be inclined to do something like...

Gateway: https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/ucg-ultra
PoE Switch: https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-switching/products/usw-lite-8-poe
Access Point: https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-wifi/products/u6-plus
1 Mini switch? https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-switching/products/usw-flex-mini
Maybe the other as switch+AP combo to extend your WiFi range? https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-wifi/products/u6-iw

"Stuck" at Gigabit speeds but realistically that's fine. This comes out to $725 though... you could still just start with the switches I guess.

It doesn't sound like you'd have any immediate need to manage/configure the switches? So you could just plug them together and they'll work as "dumb" switches I believe. But ultimately to get anything extra out of them, especially if you want to segregate traffic, you're going to end up down a path of buying a full suite of UniFi products lol

Depending on your PoE needs and device placement in your house, it starts to become cheaper/make sense to buy a UDR ( https://ca.store.ui.com/ca/en/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/udr ) as it includes an AP and 2xPoE. That covers your gateway and AP as well as a couple PoE ports. Although you go down to gigabit on the WAN, that won't be any different on the Ultra if you enable IDS/IPS.

I don't really need a crazy router to be honest. I can see it would be easy to go down the rabbit hole so maybe next year. I like the idea of the 2.5gb switch to switch though.

I'll have to think on it a bit. There are a number of wireless devices I use that need the 2.5ghz so I've had to split the Telus router to show both. 5ghz doesn't have good wall penetration so thinks like locks and Alexis use the 2.4ghz.

Do they still manufacture this though? I feel like I haven't seen it in stock for quite some time. Maybe they'll refresh it with WiFi 7...
They do, but it's crazy popular so they run out fast. If you flag yourself to get an email when they are stocked, you can purchase. But they sell out in a couple weeks easily. Ubiquiti always seems to short stock for their own store, preferring to fill up stock with premier partners such as LinHaw or CDW.

It's not really a 'crazy' router as much as it's just a far superior solution to what the ISP provides. It's also far cheaper than some crazy expensive 'gaming routers'. The ability to have proper security on your network, set up appropriate VLANs and have a configurable firewall is critical IMO. I just can't see a world in which I provide guests, IoT devices and every device in my house access to the same network.

As for the 2.4/5ghz switching, Ubiquiti supports 'band steering' which allows you to have an SSID run on all bands and Ubiquiti will migrate devices up to 5 or down to 2.4 as needed. I have a couple devices in the house that only run on 2.4 and I've never had an issue with it.

I also really like Ubiquiti's adoption of PPSK, allowing one SSID to serve as your connection with multiple passwords. Devices are routed to the correct VLAN based on the password provided. (ie. provide a guest password for guests, and a seperate password for your home WiFi, but you both connect to the same SSID. The device knows to route guests to the guest network based on the password used.) You can also use PPSK to provide limited, one-time access to specific VLANs for users if needed. This means you can simply revoke an individual user's PPSK to disconnect them from the network.
