I recall for a while there was a whole "mobile desktop" category like 10 years ago that kind of disappeared overnight. I swore one was called Asus mothership but when I google that it isn't what I was thinking of.

It's 10 pounds "laptop" with a desktop GPU and an ITX board inside.

It reminds me of the laptop my professor brought into class 20 years ago. That machine was from the 80's! May as well build a TR100 based ITX system and then buy the optional roller case. At least that case got padding meant to fit the case and a portable monitor. Or an AMD AI Max mini PC with a portable monitor which can be used else where.

haha. Not sure I would actually want it on my lap. I am sure it would be useful to a very small niche of people though.

makes me wonder if anyone will take a laptop mobo for the Ryzen AI 9 Max systems and built it into an enclosure that includes a good mechanical keyboard. that, with an appropriately sized / spec'd portable display could also make for an attractive portable gaming solution. one that would have the space for better cooling, so the TDP doesn't need to be neutered like it is in that 13" Asus tablet.

EDIT: rechecked Framework website. They are only selling the regular AI and not the AI Max as a laptop motherboard. AI 9 Max is only available as ITX for pre-order. AI 9 HX 370 for 13 inch laptop is $1429 CAD!

My first Laptop (intended for possible deployment on ship) was an HP single core desktop Pentium 4 and was described as a desktop replacement as opposed to a mobile laptop.

Weighed a ton, and IIRC battery life was under 2 hours.
