Finally got around to getting the Thermalright Phantom Spirit Evo installed and the black Thermalright fans.

Very pleased with the results in terms of cooling. Tested DA:The Veilguard that seemed to be running my CPU the hottest, and I went from a peak temp of 88-89 C in came to a max 79 C, usually 76-78 C, with things staying nice and quiet, and that is with the CPU running between 4700 and 4800 MHz. So I am very please with that. That's at least a 10 C drop in temps over the smaller Noctua NH-U12A I had.

Always has to be something with me and a build, but one of the 120 mm case fans seems to have a very slight tick sound that comes and goes. I'll see if it sorts itself out or if it bugs me enough to have to pursue a replacement. Everything else is so quiet I can definitely notice it when it's happening.

I had an oddity on post where all the fans would spin, but I'd get stuck at the boot light and nothing. Fixed by making sure everything was seated correctly, appeared to be, and then unplugging the 24-pin power and reconnecting it. Then everything came up as normal *shrug*

Few pics of the update that I'm calling My "Noir" Phase :) Long way from my fairly shiny custom loop but I really like this look for a change. The Phantom Spirit Evo is darn purty.

The mixed white and black build I started with. Really custom loop leftovers when I switched back to air.

Always good to have a tech helper!

Case fans removed and awaiting the Phantom Spirit Evo:

And the finished result. Slight off colour from my headlamp, but it was too dark with nothing.

The only lighting in the case is just the ROG logo at the top left, set to red when powered on the strobing when powered off.

Nice. Looks great. Try using the noctua fans without the bumper on the thermal right if the clicking doesn’t go away or even to see if you get better performance.

Thanks! The ticking is from a case fan, not the cooler, but the fan swap could be an interesting experiment for temps. I’ll put that on the to-do list.

Looks great! So, did you buy a three pack and a single TR case fan for the build?

I think we'd all be interested in your experience if you end up doing a return/RMA.

Thanks all! I'm quite pleased with it.

I ended up buying two 140mm for the front, and a three pack for the 120mm ones, top and back.

But yesterday I adjusted the top fan positions, moved them back a bit, and let the PC just idle for several hours and by the end of the day and when I turned it on this morning, no ticking (y)

I'll keep an ear on it, but at this point it may have resolved itself. I have had that happen before with other fans. I know an RMA to Thermalright would be a nice contribution to the HWC community knowledge base, but I'd really rather not have to! :)

Little update. So the ticking fan has continued to plague me as an intermittent issue. So this weekend I couldn't stand it anymore and took it out, it was one of the top ones, and flipped the remaining top one to be exhaust and moved it to the very back. That leaves the two front 140s as intake and now two 120s as exhaust. No decrease in cooling with the CPU staying below 80 C under load with this altered set up so that is interesting.

I'll have to figure out if I can return the fan and get a new one or money back. If I progress that I'll comment here.

I've yet to really get back into it, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think it's still all about the bearings and bearing types that cause those annoying noises.

Maybe someday, when I get around to doing my own "Fan Roundup of many fans new and old" I'll be more ready and willing to look into bearing types vs orientation. Because I know I've had issues with fan noises depending on those combinations.

Example-ish: I can recall many times (over the many, many years I've been a builder) where a fan would make a ticking noise when horizontal with the airflow aiming up, but Not ticking when when horizontal with airflow aiming down. And there's a couple of bearing types that tick when the fan is vertical, but not at all when it's horizontal.

Sadly, I don't think I ever took notes on which did what and when... it was always "I need an exhaust fan here, which I want to have about this much airflow and be this quiet." And that always (and still does) mean(t) that I'd grab 4-5+ fans from my parts bins and try them out, trial and error style, until I found one I was satisfied with. Yeah, no notes, just experimentation that I can't remember the specifics of.

I'll have a looksee around YT later and see if anyone has ever done a comparison of bearing types vs orientations (I hope someone has). Regardless, I think I'll add doing such tests myself to my massive list of projects... so um, it won't be happening in the near-future haha. I've got rare and unusual fans of all sizes, some of which are like 15ish years old? Might be a bigger sample size than someone only testing a few brand-new, modern fans. 🤷‍♂️

Man, how do you guys ever put up with me around here? Walls of text, all the time. Woohoo? If you've read this far, I'm both sorry and thankful in equal measure 🤣 truly a Canadian here 🇨🇦 haha. Sorry again.

Good stuff :) Just to clear in case I wasn't, set up as exhaust or intake didn't make a different. I did try that and it ticked in both installs options. But that was only horizontal, in the top of the case. I didn't try it vertical, in the back of the case for example.

In this situation, it shouldn't matter as the 120s are all exactly the same fan. So if it did matter on one, but not the others, I'd still class that as some kind of manufacturing flaw.
