This is great in that you will be able to drive 4K 144hz + without issue or maybe some wide variant of it.

Also interesting that its using the TB3 Phy... Maybe this is why Intel decided to release it as open/royalty free for USB4 (or vice versa). Its going to be so ubiquitous . Lets hope they fix Intels self imposed issues with it (forced BW reservation) ;)

My fear is just how long it is going to take for things like this to end up on cards.

I take some of that back, after reading Anandtech. Tethered connections are stupid and this is a non-starter for most.

Having a non-replaceable manufacture determined fixed length cord for every device limits the ability to use different lengths to fit your needs as well if something breaks or a cable/connector goes bad throwing out a 700$ monitor is CRAZY

Honestly at this point I'm all for them killing off HDMI & DisplayPort for USB-C to handle video. 4 USB-C connectors could almost fit in the space of 1 regular sized display port connection, less space taken allows for better venting on an air cooled card. Daisy chaining USB-C monitors is a huge convenience on multi monitor setups etc.

oooh, you meant tethered as in wired directly in. agreed, that's a terrible idea. :doh:

Displayport 1.4 is ~32Gbps*
Displayport 2.0 is ~80Gbps*
HDMI 2.1 is ~48 Gbps*
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is ~20Gbps*
Thunderbolt 3 is ~40Gbps*
USB 4 is ~40Gbps*

*Effective rates are lower

2560x1440 @ 120hz @ 8 bit = 13.27Gbps
3840x2160 @ 120hz @ 8 bit = 35.64 Gbps
3840x2160 @ 120hz @ 10bit = 44.55 Gbps

Keep in mind 10-bit is required for true HDR. As such, it's not feasible to completely replace DP or HDMI for GPUs.

Regarding packaging size - apparently Type-C connectors don't stack particularly well, as evidenced by the lack of them on motherboards, generally with that cited as the reason why. It'll be a problem on GPUs as well.

You make a good point about 120hz required throughput and wasn't something I was thinking of was thinking more form factor than anything.

USB-C doesn't need to be vertically stacked though for a GPU...

4 mini display ports and a DVI didn't need any vertical stacking, and 4 USB-C connections would be even smaller than the 4 mini display ports.

Yes but you originally indicated 4x Type-C fitting in the space of 1x Displayport, but that could only be possible with stacking, something that isn't currently being done. It's likely 4x Type-C would allow for a 5th connector, similar to the 4x DP/1x DVI of the 6990.



This is of course assuming a reference size PCB, and not the egregious tall or "wide" cards that have come out in recent years.
