When I used handbrake to convert some videos for my kids to save on storage from the SD card step 1 before anything was to make sure I had the highest res copy. Then I transcoded down to match the resolution of the tablet (720p-ish) and ensured I was encoding everything in mono.

Most tablets and phones don't even have stereo speakers and at the time I refused to let them use headphones as I wanted to be sure that whatever they were watching was what I expected even if my eyes were not immediatly on them. For personal use I would have just gone to stereo instead assuming that I would be using headphones on occasion.

Those 2 things im pretty sure whole 90 minute movie would becomes hundred of MB instead of multiple GB's and stuff like that.

Edit: Sorry didn't realize a bot or something bumped this I didn't notice the origional post date.

If this isn't a dead thread resurrection: are you sticking to just cutting the resolution down or do you want ways to decrease the file size as well? For the latter I'd recommend (using handbrake): HEVC (*not nvenc*) x265 10-bit, CQ 22, medium speed. Just make sure the tablets can play x265 10bit without stuttering. In which case, you might have to stick to something older (h.264) but the other handbrake settings can remain similar.

you should be able to just use h264 and with some decent settings get it done really fast and looking good for the resolution which I think you said was 720p, or you could use h264 NVEnc If you have an Nvidia GPU in the system you can get a very good result with it and amazing ones with fine-tuning, files size you can get even smaller if you want to spend the time on fine-tuning if not they will be a little bigger then normal h264. IMO
