So the PC I built my parents has been up and running for a while without issue. It did have the requirement to use a pin or password though on startup.

Today I was visiting and decided to “help” and remove it. Unfortunately I typed the password wrong when making the change. Outcome:

1. When the pc starts now it tries to login to a separate “account” but says it can’t. It is automatically going to this one.

2. See picture below. Both have the same name, but the “new” messed up one doesn’t have a picture (just the white/grey circle).

3. If I manually select the original account it then signs in fine with the pin/password (as it originally did)

4. In windows I don’t see a second user account that can be removed.

WTF…I made it worse. Please help.

I wish I could help. W11 and sign in issues are one of the reasons I am still on W10. However the other day I stumbled on the use of no@thankyou.com to avoid any sign in on boot. This means I may soon try W11. Sorry I can not help you fix your issue.

The new account isn't under some odd location is it? For example some Googling seems to suggest removing accounts from under a School or Work heading? (Not on Windows 11, in office not at home, so can't check atm).

Are there actually two accounts under C:\Users? That might help you track it as the user folders can't be named the same.

Also perhaps you could set the default account to the one you want to use as a workaround until you actually get the other one deleted. This can be done via PowerShell (at least one way), but you would need to know that C:\Users folder name I think to know what Windows thinks the account name is.

I didn't see a second user account on the C driver when I checked yesterday. I will have to double check.

Run > netplwiz?
Computer Management > Users?

Sounds like you've inadvertently made a new user on the system. The folder under C:\Users would only show up after successful logon.

I will check those locations when I get a chance and verify. I agree that is what it seems like, but in my time compressed attempt to fix it I didn't notice a second account, other than at the sign in page. That said I don't have confidence right now in that answer. I will update once I verify one way or the other.

have you tried the new updated tool from Christ Titus i have hadto use to fix the autologin if you can log in you use (iwr -useb https://christitus.com/win | iex) in powershell- admin priv go to tweaks and auto login type in the password then disable, then reenter if you change it and want it to autologin.
