Since I moved from the 9900x to the 9800x3d I've been noticing a couple "odd" things. Late last week I did a fresh install of Windows 11 to see if it would help with my COD DMZ crashes.

Since the Windows reinstall COD Blackops zombies gives me some artifacting ie the health meter will disappear or everything will disappear on the mini map or the whole screen will take on a brownish color and then the grass will slowly come back in blotches. Before the reinstall, Zombies was flawless.

COD DMZ, well... DMZ I've always had issues with crashes (directx) regardless of the build, guess can ignore this as it's just the default and isn't specific to this build (but if someone has any ideas, that'd be SWEET) Well, crashes do seem to be a little more, maybe once an hour. CPU and GPU temps appear fine. (CPU 55ish GPU 55-60ish)

Prior to the 9800x3d when playing world of war ships, I'd play the game and run plex flawlessly on the second monitor. Since changing from the 9900x to the 9800x3d Warships plays fine, but plex will consistently stutter. Even with the i7 it was perfectly fine. Both monitors are connected to the 4080, was thinking of running the 2nd monitor off of the integrated video. GPU though is at max 92% usage and 55-60C temp and CPU is under 50% and 50ish for temp.

Windows is fully patched, bios is up to date, did a bios reset last night, newest chipset driver from AMD. It's odd, I did a full uninstall and tried to install the chipset drivers from Asus. but it hangs on the determining specs page. Newest driver from Nvidia.

There is no overclocking (that I'm aware of) except for the ram, I did disable xmp to take that out of the equation, the system is set to "normal" in the bios and no overclocking on the GPU.

Any ideas or direction will be greatly appreciated

Honestly? Try the 9900x again. You've covered all the bases... so it might be a rare lemon chip OR maybe someone "fudged" a 9800x3d label and its really a lesser cpu? Would take some microcode trickery to fool the OS, but I think it's possible (and sadly not as unlikely as it once was).

Either way. Go back the 9900x for now? And maybe look really carefully at the 9800x3d from CPU-Z and Hwinfo64 angles, see if anything atypical is happening (i guess before swapping the 9900x back in? Your call)

I ordered a 9950x so we'll see.

Weird though that the zombies issue didn't happen until the fresh install of windows.

I did read some people were having issues where windows wasn't showing all 8 cores, I checked last night and mine shows them all.

Do the 9000 x3D chips turn off half of their cores the way some of the older x3D chips used to? Does it only do this with the game you mentioned? I'am thinking it's some kind of profile that is pushing only the game data as a priority. I ask cause I wonder if the cache is only being allocated to games with some type of game profile or something. Just throwing it out there: Have you tried to set 1/2 core/s affinity to plex and remove the core/s from the game just to see if anything changes? It just seems like a bottleneck of some type.

But CM could be on to something to maybe a defective chip. But it's only doing it for this game that would lean towards some type of setting or profile, I have heard win11 has some strange gaming results and settings for the performance of games.

Well then, the only option you've got is swapping the other hardware you have, might get lucky. Different psu? One stick of ram or all different ram? The problems only starting when you swapped CPUs still points a big finger at it though...

And yeah, a silkscreened 9800x3d label stuck over, say, a 7700 isn't impossible. Right number of cores and threads. And right when a program/game tried to use the X3D cache it would cause issues, as that cache doesn't exist on 7700s... 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Don't know what else to suggest. It's that, or just a lemon 9800x3d. Some people are, apparently, burning them/damaging them. And dishonest people will stick their broken cpus in the box of a brand-new purchase from Amazon or similar, then return it. That's why I'd never buy top-end parts online right now tbh, too much of that crap going on, and not enough people from vendors catching it.

Edit: definitely check @Izerous ' ideas out too. I don't have a ton of win11 PCs or a ton of X3D chips, so I don't have a big enough sample size to give further advice.

The 9800x3d is a single ccd, so it won't turn off cores.

Warships is the only game I play that I watch shows while playing. Since it's so slow action I can pay attention to the show while I travel to battle
