Played a bit more of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 today.
Damn, this is a hell of a game so far. It's what Square Enix has been missing over the last decade
- Adult characters with no token annoying kid? Check
- Turn-based with a timing mechanic to make it a little more interactive? Check
- Unique story and not tired anime tropes? Check
- No 'Nomura-esque' story that totally incomprehensible? Check
Don't get me wrong I can enjoy a trope-y JRPG if it's done well, such as Trails, but SE's been pretty lacking since FF X in their AAA RPGs and it's nice to see this turning out so well. Like BG3 reversed the 'turn-based CRPGs are dying' nonsense, I hope this does the same for JRPGs.
I'm still pretty early, but hopeful there's a lot to like here already. It is very 'hallway' like X (but not as bad as FFXIII), and the systems can seem a little overwhelming at first, but things get broken down and explained in a good enough pace to let you wrap your head around the battle system.
