As NVIDIA released their refreshed GTX 500-series AMD took what could only be called an observer's position, biding their time until their own response was ready. Today we find out exactly what they have been working on since before the HD 5800 cards were released more than a year ago. The HD 6970 and HD 6950 have finally arrived, bringing with them improvements aplenty but will it be enough to dethrone NVIDIA?

Likely a 32nm part named Ibiza. At 32nm, they should have been able to enable 30 SIMDs while staying under the 300W mark. On 40nm...not so much.

darn... hd 6970 is not too bad as gtx 580 except the price... so i should get hd 6950 gb2 CF for 600cdn...

but i will wait see what nvidia do... maybe they cut the price again...

and i hope someday... someone will break their oc limitation... and watercooling block too...

Great review Sky, the results aren't as bad as some of the early benchmarks had led me to believe, and I must say those 8x MSAA values were impressive.

I am a little curious in your conclusion why you mention that the 6970 will have a hard time, it has the same price (basically, some models are less some are more) as the GTX 570 and the two trade blows.

Excellent review. However I noticed that in a lot of reviews lately, you keep on giving out the Dam Good Value award. If one was to base their purchase on your conclusion, what the hell would they pick?!

I myself would go through the reviews and get some opinions on which GPU would be the best for my use, but you get the idea.

HD 6970 is $20 more than the GTX 570 which make the AMD card too expensive from a per / $ perspective for people with 24" and under monitors. We go by SRPs for new cards.
