GeForce RTX 40 Series Annouced

I've seen RTX 3070's go for $450 on RFD. Best bang for the buck.
Now is the time to buy.

Once the sticker shock wears off, just like the 1000/2000 series, the 'last gen' cards will creep up in price.

Why? If a 4070 is the same performance as a 3080 then the used market will inflate the price towards retail.

Same thing happened with the 1000 series.

Mark my words this will be the 2000 series in sales all over again.

There is an absolute FLOOD of 3000 series out. And at these prices in the current economic climate? Oh boy...
It does seem very odd doesn't it? I'm sure NVIDIA has lots of smart people doing market analysis and the like, but I don't get it. They're seeing something I'm not I guess... or maybe NVIDIA is just suffering from a bit of hubris... again... :)

I thought Nvidia has bought more fab for 4000 series than 3000. If that is true then there will be a lot of 4000 series cards. Without crypto mopping up supply Nvidia could be in quite the spot. They are making cards (Ada Lovelace) that apparently cost a lot more to make compared to Ampere. What a ride they may now be on...

edit: oh ya, I was going to mention the state of the economy and how it will potentially create a difficult market to sell into.

Two main reasons for these launch prices that I can discern.

There are tons of RTX 3xxx series overstock. The reason it isn't launched this month and is instead an announcement was because of vendor pushback and outright refusals to buy RTX 4000 chips unless concessions were made - via buybacks, rebates, and delay of new launch to clear old inventory. To that end, Nvidia is pricing these above existing RTX 3xxx while keeping those as the "low-mid end" to try to continue to sell the overstocked old inventory.

The other aspect is they are now openly working against their AIBs. If you look at the spec pages, the specs for a RTX 4080 12GB is curiously similar to what you would expect of a 4070, or perhaps 4070 Ti later on in the generations life. You will also see for the RTX 4080 12GB dimensions are "varies by manufacturer", suggesting no FE model will exist. AIBs will find it likely difficult to make RTX 4080 12GBs that are cheaper than a RTX 4080 16GB FE, especially if Nvidia decides to drop prices. They are slowly squeezing their own AIBs out of the high end as they move to vertically integrate.

It's going to be really interesting to see what the RDNA3 launch on Nov 3 ends up being. I'm thinking back to R700 and believe it may be similar again for this gen.
