Update: Ended up getting a 5770 after doing some more reading. No longer need a 4870. Thanks.
Looking for a 4870 1GB card to reflash for my Mac Pro. Let me know what you have and in particular if you have ever flashed one of these for the Mac Pro.
Thanks
Aaaahh. Now I get what you are saying. Once past the initial startup costs for a platform you can carry forward along that platform line without going through the startup again. That is certainly true.
I think that the cost of the HW itself pales in comparison to the training and additional SW...
He wasn't talking about initial purchase. He was talking about upgrading a Dell by adding a bit of memory and applying patches. The same thing can be done on a Mac. Just wasn't getting his point. The debate on original purchase price is a different one than what was being stated in the post...
You can do the same thing with a Mac can't you? I upgraded my wife's Mac mini from 1GB to 4GB RAM that I picked up cheap on eBay. I have upgraded memory and hard drives on Macbooks and Macbook Pros. Just installed OSX 10.6.4 update on my Macs for latest OS improvements.
Not sure how this is...
Build yourself a Hackintosh. Either an ASUS or Gigabyte board has pretty good support. You'll find all sorts of guides over at insanelymac.
Personally I am not a Fanboi of either platform. My gaming machines are, of course, PC's but I converted my main server to a Hackintosh because I like the...
Not a biggie. I flashed my 5870 BIOS to solve an issue with Display Port blinking issue in Eyefinity (now works perfectly).
You want to put their new BIOS file on a USB flash drive and then reboot with the flash drive. To make a bootable flash drive use the HP utility called sp27213.exe You...
Smart move by Nvidia... Wel actually it would have been smarter to never impose the restirction in the first place. I mean what kind of logic leads to a policy that prevents people from buying more of your cards??? Even if it is lower profit margin cards it is still a sale to someone who is...
Not a miracle. Just different. Some things Windows is better at and some thing a Mac is better at. I use both. The Windows machines are mostly about gaming. My Macs are mostly used for video editing. And my server is a Hackintosh that runs OSX on one screen and then Parallels virtual machine...
Yeah I noticed this too. I have a Hackintosh that I use mainaly for video editing and as a server. Running a Q6600 @ 3.5GHz, 8GB memory, and an 8800GTS 512MB video card and on Portal @ 1680X1050 I actually have to turn down some settings to make it playable. Portal is not all tha a demanding a...
5770 at that resolution. 5850 would be overkill but could come into play if you ever upgrade your monitor. In fact, take teh money you save with a 5770 and buy a better monitor

I have this one. Works great.
Yes, that is the patch I used to get Physx running. In typical Nvidia style they disable Physx if they detect an ATI card in the system :thumb: Fortunately, common sense prevails and there are workarounds.
Going to play some more tonight to see if I can get the folding working. Otherwise I...
I thought that the dummy plug was required on the GT240 or else the Nvidia drivers disable it? Or are you suggesting keep 1 monitor on the 5870 and 1 monitor on the GT240?
The thing is, the 5870 was folding fine before I added the GT240 and the 5870 had the 3 monitors attached to it.
Thanks. Will try this tonight.
I did dlete the work folders from both but did not delete the fahcore files. Maybe that is the issue.
The GT240 has a dummy plug. My 5870 has 3 monitors hanging off it (eyefinity).
Doh!
(loads shotgun... shoots right foot... reloads shotgun... shoots left foot... aargh.
I could remove the GT240 until after the chimp challenge and reinstall later I guess. Hopefully I haven't buggered my 5870 folding so that even if I remove the GT240 it still isn't working.... :angry2:
I don't see those files in my folding folder? I will have to do a search to see if they are stored elsewhere.
The thing is, the 5870 was folding fine before I added the GT240.
I tried this again this morning using teh forcegpu flag. Same issue.
My 5870 was folding fine with the forcegpu ati_r700 switch. Now with the GT240 in there even the 5870 won't work
It is good to hear that your mixed setup is working though. At least it indicates that this is...
I tried that as well. See below.
The reason I thought my GT240 is GPU 0 is my GPUZ shows the GT240 as teh first card (see attached image). Is there a utility that tells me which is GPU 0 and which is GPU 1?
