Been lurking here for a while but finally decided to post. Anyway like the title states im doing quite and upgrade. That budget too is only for a cpu,mobo,memory,case and cooler. Will be salvaging a 4870x2, pc power and cooling 910w psu, a samsung 24" monitor and my hard drives for the moment. The system will be mostly used for gaming and a bit of encoding, still i want the fastest stuff possible. As far as i can tell the core i7s are the best of the cpu bunch, mobo and memory is where im kinda stuck, want a high end mobo with all the goodies since i will o/c and usually keep my my boards around for a couple years. THx for any advice
 
hey, welcome to the forum.

For high end pc, I7 is the way to go right now. You have two choices, either P55 or X58.

Advantages of P55 is that you get about the same performance than X58 for less. You can OC a I7 860 in the same level than a I7 920 and both are 8 threads.

X58 Mobo are expensive, but you will gain the possibility to uprade to the new six cores cpu that are coming out on this spring. There is no indication that P55 will ever support thoses.

The triple channel ram of the X58 wil make the the Ram cost more expensive, while not really impacting the PC performance.

I would not spend more for RAM over 1600 MHZ has this will be plenty for a 4.0 OC.

My sugestion would be to buy a 860. Mobo wise, you will be able to find a board with all the goodies for about a 100 $ less thatn the X58 equivalent version. Spend the money you saved of some cooling solution, go water !

I was thinking going x58 for the 6core support down the road, since the mobo will most likely last me at least a couple cpu upgrades. At least it narrows down the choices a bit. I have no probs with spending $400cdn or so a mobo, not going to cheap out. No benefits to getting more than ddr-1600?
 
Not that there is no benefits for more than 1600, but it is limited. I mean, if you want to spend the money then go for it, you'll most likely get more OC on the ram but wont change much on the CPU OC.

And if you want to keep the mobo for many cpu upgrade, at this point x58 seems to be the better choice, specially if 400 $ does not scare you.

nope not at all. Was originally looking at an asus rampage II extreme mobo but the have heard good things about the evga boards and the new gigabyte board doesnt look to bad either. THe price difference is significant on the ram over 1600. Any $ left over can do towards other goodies if i dont break my budget.
 
Board wise, I worked with a Asus P6T and my current Giga UD5. Both are solid clocker and are well built. The differentiation will be at the warrenty level and brand service/recognition. EVGA seems to be getting a bigger player lately, there is a lot of X58 Classified user on this forum, maybe you can get input from some of them.

Ive always used asus or giga boards so i know what i get. As for mem any suggestions? Was looking at a 6gig gskill 6-7-6-18 kit for $229, corsair kits are a bit more expensive. I think im settled on a 920 cpu, the rest are to expensive lol.
 
I'd recommend X58 if you ever see yourself going Crossfire or SLI in the future. This way you won't be limited to the 8X PCIe speeds on the P55.

I can see myself doing a crossfire system if i have the option open to me. In the not to distant future i will upgrading this card too, kinda want eyefinity but thats for another day.
